Year 5 Maths: Wednesday 1st July – Equivalent Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (2)

Morning Year 5! Today you will be looking at converting between fractions percentages and decimals.

The key rule you need to remember, is that % is out of 100.

When you have fractions which are not out of 100 e.g. 1/25 – you can multiply both the numerator and denominator to make it a fraction out of 100. For example 1/25 multiplied by 4 would be 4/100 = 4% and 0.04.

    • Hi Lakeysha,

      so 30 is the whole and you want to find out 2/5 of 30.

      Remember when you phrase the question as 2/5 out of 30 – you have seen this question throughout the year. so divide 30 by the denominator (5) and multiply by the numerator (2). This will give you a number.

      50% would be half of 30, because remember 50/100 is the same as a half.

      Use this working out to solve the question and figure out the children who do not have coloured hair.

    • For 4 b,c Change denominator to 100 and then you can work out decimal and percentage.
      Example 1/5 = 1×20 =20
      5/20=100
      1/5= 20/100
      1/5= 0.2=20%

    4.) Class 4 has 1/5 with glasses and Class 5 has 25% that wear glasses that means that Class 5 has more people with glasses as 25% is a quarter of 100 which is 25/100 but 1/5 is out of fifths and it is 20/100 as a fraction as it is in fifths it is smaller. So Class 5 have more glasses.

    5.) 10% of the Class have neither Brown or Blonde hair as a 50% have blonde hair which is 50/100 which is also 1/2 but an extra 2/5 of people have brown hair which is 40/100 so if you add 50/100 + 40/100 = 90/100 so it is 90/100 and what is left to make 100 as it is a percentage is 10% so 10% of people have neither Brown or Blonde hair.

    6.) 1/8 as a fraction is 12.5 I got this from the equation 100 / 8 which equals 12.5. As for 3/8 you just have to multiply 12.5 by 3 which is 37.5 so that is how you change them.

Question 5-Filip spends 2/5 of his money so how much does he save? You would need to do 100 divide by 5 = 20 and then multiply 20×2=40% and then you would do 100-40 = 60%
