# Year 5 Maths: Wednesday 1st July – Equivalent Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (2)

Morning Year 5! Today you will be looking at converting between fractions percentages and decimals.

The key rule you need to remember, is that % is out of 100.

When you have fractions which are not out of 100 e.g. 1/25 – you can multiply both the numerator and denominator to make it a fraction out of 100. For example 1/25 multiplied by 4 would be 4/100 = 4% and 0.04.

The videos below explain different methods a lot clearer.

1. Lakeysha M.

I have completed this in my homework book but I don’t know how to work out Q7.

• Mr Janjua

Hi Lakeysha,

so 30 is the whole and you want to find out 2/5 of 30.

Remember when you phrase the question as 2/5 out of 30 – you have seen this question throughout the year. so divide 30 by the denominator (5) and multiply by the numerator (2). This will give you a number.

50% would be half of 30, because remember 50/100 is the same as a half.

Use this working out to solve the question and figure out the children who do not have coloured hair.

2. Inaaya W.

5)Folio saves 60%.
6)Class 5 have more children than class 4.
7)50% don’t have blonde hair.
8)1/8=0.125
3/8=0.375

3. Fatima G.

I have done this!

6. Tahseen S.

1a. As a fraction, the portion circled would be 4/10.
1b. The fraction as a decimal would be 0.4.
1c. The decimal as a percentage would be 40%.
2. I have done it in my book.
3. I have done in my book.

I have done the rest in my book.

7. Saifullah K.

Question 1:
1A: 40
100
1B: 0.40
1C: 40%
3A:
1: 25. = 0.25 = 25%
100
2: 50. = 0.50 = 50%
100
3: 75. = 0.75 = 75%
100

8. Hishaam

A. 25/100 = 0.25 = 25%
B. 50/100 = 0.50 = 50%
C. 75/100 = 0.75 = 75%

D. 1 whole = 100%
E. 1/5 = 20%
F. 1/10 = 10%

1. 1/5 = 20 = 20%
2. 2/5 = 40 = 40%
3. 3/5 = 60 = 60%
4. 4/5 = 80 = 80%
5. 5/5 = 100 = 100%
6. If he spent 2/5 and he saved the rest that would mean that he saved 3/5 out of it and that is 60 so he saved 60% in percentages.

• Miss Cochrane

Good work Hisham. How did you work out 1/5 is 20%?

9. Falikou S.

but iv done the rest

10. Falikou S.

on nuber 4 i didnt get b&c

• Mrs Sharma

For 4 b,c Change denominator to 100 and then you can work out decimal and percentage.
Example 1/5 = 1×20 =20
5/20=100
1/5= 20/100
1/5= 0.2=20%
I hope this helps.

Well done for completing rest

11. Hafsa B.

I have done it in my homework book

B) 75/100 , 0.75 , 75%

1/5 = 20 = 20%
2/5 = 40 = 40%
3/5 = 60 = 60%
4/5 = 80 = 80%
5/5 = 100 = 100%

3.) If he spent 2/5 and he saved the rest that would mean that he saved 3/5 and that is 60 and in a percentage that would be 60% which could also be 60/100 as percentages are always out of 100. So he saved 60%.

4.) Class 4 has 1/5 with glasses and Class 5 has 25% that wear glasses that means that Class 5 has more people with glasses as 25% is a quarter of 100 which is 25/100 but 1/5 is out of fifths and it is 20/100 as a fraction as it is in fifths it is smaller. So Class 5 have more glasses.

5.) 10% of the Class have neither Brown or Blonde hair as a 50% have blonde hair which is 50/100 which is also 1/2 but an extra 2/5 of people have brown hair which is 40/100 so if you add 50/100 + 40/100 = 90/100 so it is 90/100 and what is left to make 100 as it is a percentage is 10% so 10% of people have neither Brown or Blonde hair.

6.) 1/8 as a fraction is 12.5 I got this from the equation 100 / 8 which equals 12.5. As for 3/8 you just have to multiply 12.5 by 3 which is 37.5 so that is how you change them.

1a)The fraction of the bead string is 40/100.
1b)The decimal is 0.40.
1c)As a percentage it is 40%
2a)I would circle 70 of the beads to make 70%
2b)I would circle 8 of the beads to make 0.08.
2c)I would circle 40 of the beads to create 40/100.
2d)I would circle 95 of the beads to create 95%.
3a) 25/100 = 0.25 = 25%
50/100 = 0.50 = 50%
75/100 = 0.75 = 75%
3B. 1/4 = 25/100 = 0.25
2/4 = 50/100 = 0.50
3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75
4a)1 = 100%
1/2 = 50%
1/5 = 20%
1/10 = 10%
4b) 1/5=20=20%
2/5=40=40%
3/5=60=60%
4/5=80=80%
5/5=100=10%
5)Fili0 saved 60%
6) class 5 has more children with glasses.
7)30% of children don’t have brown or blond hair.

3/8=375.

42. Harun O.

1. Filip saves 40% of his money.
2. Class 4 have less people who wear glasses than Class 5 because 25% is bigger than 1/5 equivalent to 20%.
3. In class 5 there are more people who have blonde hair than brown hair because 50% is bigger than 2/5 equivalent to 40%
4.1/8=0.125
3/8= 0.375

• Mrs Khan

Harun, please complete questions 1-4. You have numbered these incorrectly and email your work. Also please check these answers and remember percentage is out of 100. Question 5-Filip spends 2/5 of his money so how much does he save? You would need to do 100 divide by 5 = 20 and then multiply 20×2=40% and then you would do 100-40 = 60%
