Year 5 Maths: Wednesday 1st July – Equivalent Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (2)

Morning Year 5! Today you will be looking at converting between fractions percentages and decimals.

The key rule you need to remember, is that % is out of 100.

When you have fractions which are not out of 100 e.g. 1/25 – you can multiply both the numerator and denominator to make it a fraction out of 100. For example 1/25 multiplied by 4 would be 4/100 = 4% and 0.04.

The videos below explain different methods a lot clearer.

Independent Task: Watch the video above and answer the questions below.

  1. Lakeysha M.

I have completed this in my homework book but I don’t know how to work out Q7.

    1. Mr Janjua

      Hi Lakeysha,

so 30 is the whole and you want to find out 2/5 of 30.

Remember when you phrase the question as 2/5 out of 30 – you have seen this question throughout the year. so divide 30 by the denominator (5) and multiply by the numerator (2). This will give you a number.

50% would be half of 30, because remember 50/100 is the same as a half.

Use this working out to solve the question and figure out the children who do not have coloured hair.

    5)Folio saves 60%.
6)Class 5 have more children than class 4.
    7)50% don’t have blonde hair.
    8)1/8=0.125
    3/8=0.375

    I have done it.

  6. Tahseen S.

    Independent task:
1a. As a fraction, the portion circled would be 4/10.
1b. The fraction as a decimal would be 0.4.
1c. The decimal as a percentage would be 40%.
    2. I have done it in my book.
    3. I have done in my book.

I have done the rest in my book.

    Question 1:
    1A: 40
    100
    1B: 0.40
    1C: 40%
    3A:
    1: 25. = 0.25 = 25%
    100
    2: 50. = 0.50 = 50%
    100
    3: 75. = 0.75 = 75%
    100

  8. Hishaam

    A. 25/100 = 0.25 = 25%
    B. 50/100 = 0.50 = 50%
    C. 75/100 = 0.75 = 75%

    D. 1 whole = 100%
    E. 1/5 = 20%
    F. 1/10 = 10%

    1. 1/5 = 20 = 20%
    2. 2/5 = 40 = 40%
    3. 3/5 = 60 = 60%
    4. 4/5 = 80 = 80%
    5. 5/5 = 100 = 100%
    6. If he spent 2/5 and he saved the rest that would mean that he saved 3/5 out of it and that is 60 so he saved 60% in percentages.

    1. Miss Cochrane

Good work Hisham. How did you work out 1/5 is 20%?

  9. Falikou S.

    but iv done the rest

  10. Falikou S.

    on nuber 4 i didnt get b&c

    1. Mrs Sharma

For 4 b,c Change denominator to 100 and then you can work out decimal and percentage.
      Example 1/5 = 1×20 =20
      5/20=100
      1/5= 20/100
      1/5= 0.2=20%
      I hope this helps.

      Well done for completing rest

  11. Hafsa B.

I have done it in my homework book

    1. Mrs Sharma

Super please email it to us.
Please represent 3/5 in a percentage form.

  12. Velin R.

I did all the tasks in my homework book.

    1. Mrs Sharma

Looking forward to see your amazing work Velin.

6)26 out of 100 beads are circled.
26/100 of the bead is circled=0.26=26%

    1. Mrs Sharma

Abulhamid please read the questions carefully.
First questions answers should be in fractions.
      Please recheck your work.
