5,000 people were forced to march for 3 days.
5)Why did Sigi and the other people scatter for safety in the town of Wels?
There was an air-raid and everyone scattered to find shelter.

  11. 1.) Sigi was evacuated on March 1945 as the British bombing was getting way more frequent. Before they left people said that they could help themselves to food in the kitchen it was like music to their ears. Sigi got a loaf of bread that was covered in mould and some cooked beetroot that was as pungent as an unwashed armpit. He was ravenous enough to eat it and lucky not to suffer from unpleasant consequences. The started the evacuation on foot . Hundreds walking under the armed guard of the SS. Sigi said ” They had weapons that they were not afraid to use”. Five hours of walking got them to a port where they were each given half a loaf of bread and a spoonful of margarine.

2.) Sigi was compelled to share his food with Mr Singer as Mr singer had no food. Sigi offered if they could do a trade but Mr singer had nothing to offer . Sigi said “Accept his clothes on his bony back”. Mr Singer went on to tell Sigi that they were related . He said that Sigi was Janka’s son ( Sigi’s dad ). Mr Singer even said all of the names of Sigi’s brothers and sisters. As soon as he mentioned his wife Sigi knew he wans not lying. Sigi all so knew that he was telling the truth. ( I think Mr Singer is Sigi’s uncle as he knows Sigi’s dad and maybe his wife is Sigi’s known Auntie).

3.) They were marched through the town of Mauthausen to their camps. Sigi saw some comfy cottages and he thought they were for them but they were not. Sigi says “I hadn’t realised that the comfortable-looking homes were for the SS. My hopes and dreams crushed”. Instead they were taken to ditch next to a fence leading to a tent the size of a Marquee ( A tent like structure). He had found out that his first cousin was there . He vaguely recognised a boy sitting on a ruck sack it was his brother Mischi. Sigi said ” He was so matchstick skinny that I had to flesh him out with my eyes” . Sigi had learned that Mischi had been on a 17 – day march.

4.) Mauthausen was a terrible place as the food there was scarce and there was nowhere to sleep. The SS announced one day that the camp had to be evacuated, warning us that those not strong enough to walk a long distance should stay behind or face being shot. He had boots flapping at the soles but he took that risk to do the three day march. ( Even though his shoes were ripped at the soles). He Imagined that the SS guards could not take them to a place worse then Mauthausen. In a group of 5,000 they marched for three days without being given any food or water from the guards. marched for three days without being given any food or water from the guards. They twisted through towns like a giant snake.marched for three days without being given any food or water from the guards. We twisted through towns and villages like a giant snake. Nuns, who must have been used to such sights left cooked potatoes in the ditches for them. They also looked for snails which were apparently good for snacking on.

5.) One day while resting they found a man from the groups before laying down in exhaustion he was too tired to carry on. As the SS guards cast him away Sigi had an eye for the mans perfect boots. When He tried to pull them off the man yelled “Lass dort!”. ( Which in Yiddish means leave them there). Sigi respected the mans wishes but he could not help thinking that he would have got a better use out of them then the man. When they got to the town of Wels they heard a siren and British bombers loomed over the city. A heavily pregnant woman threw a loaf of bread on the floor. As Sigi tried to get it a SS fighter pulled him back and beat him with a rifle. But Sigi hid the bread safely.
