Today, we have been learning about Coventrian Delia Derbyshire and her amazing work with electronic music composing. In school, we have been comparing her Doctor Who theme tune that she wrote and produced and the version by Orbital. Please listen below and answer the questions.

  1. 1)I preferred orbital because it was smoother than the Delia Derbyshire version.
    2)At the start of Delia’s version you can hear strings but in the orbital version it’s quieter and smoother.
    3)They both have some instruments in the background.
    4)Tone:
    The orbital version slowly gets louder and is very smooth
    Delia’s version it gets loud and then quiet. In some parts it gets extremely loud without knowing it would.
    Beats:
    In the orbital version the beats were hard to hear over the music.
    In Delia’s version you can hear strings making a repeating sound.
    Rhythm:
    The rhythm in Delia’s at times repeats and then changes.
    In the orbital version it’s always changing.
    Tempo:
    At times in the orbital version things can speed up and slow down.
    Delia’s version is mostly quick and doesn’t slow down much.

  2. I liked the Delia Derbyshire version because the doctor who one was faSt and this version wasn’t fast and I heared all the music fluently.
    They were both the same piece of music.

  3. I liked the original version because it was more spooky and has suspense.
    The difference was that the original was more slow but on the other hand the modern version is more upbeat and faster.
    2)The differences I noticed was that the new version had a fast tempo and created less suspense.
    3) The similarities was that both theme songs had the same tune.
    4)The tone for both songs would be low (when it was spookier) and would suddenly go high,(similar to the tempo).The rhythm would repeat after it would have a high pitch.The rhythm of the theme tune stayed the same throughout the whole theme tune.

    I preferred orbital more than the original version because it was quite relaxing.there were also wavy beats and a slow tempo that began going faster. There was a slow background rhythm.
    2) What differences did you hear between the two?
    The original one was linked to a spacey themed tune and it was very dramatic, however the orbital was not linked to space theme it was less eerie more relaxing and slow beats not like the original.
    3) What similarities were there?
    They both had slow tempo at the start but it got slower in the orbital and the same in the original

    Harroop: I perfered the orbital version because it is upbeat and calm however Zain also prefered the orbital version because it was calmer but the original version was more eerie.

    What differences did you hear between the two?

    The difference is when they add the noises the pitch is quite high on the orbital version, there were some changes at the very start like in the orbital version it had a different beat before they played the music.but
    What similarities were there?
    The similarities were that the music and sounds were the same but in a high pitch.

    Ilyas has preferred original because it gave more feeling of dr who to Ilyas although I prefer orbital because it was more relaxing and had more sounds and notes

    What differences did you hear between the two?

    Ilyas has said the first one has gave the dr who feeling and showed him it was quite a eerie show however I said that the orbital is more constantly using the alien sound and beats that could make it eerie

    What similarities were there?

    There was still the eerie sounds and they had the same beat and the same tune mostly.

    The original had a more dark sound and fewer beats the rhythm stayed the same and the orbital had a more light tone.

    Three people preferred original because it was suspense and eerie. 1 person chose the orbital because they like the soft sound.
    2) What was the differences you heard between them?
    In the original Dr who I heard that the tempo was much more faster and the original had less sounds, on the other hand the orbital had more beats and the tempo was much slower.
    3) What similarities were there?
    Dr who original was eerie and the orbital eerie too.
    Dr who and the orbital both have a alien theme.

    I prefer the Dr Who because it has a slow tempo and then it gets fast however other people chose orbital it was slow the theme was like park music.
    What differences did you hear between the two?
    The orbital is a bit slow and Dr who is faster then orbital.
    What similarities were there?
    Dr Who has slow tempo but the orbital is fast. The sounds are kind of similar.

    The tempo is fast the rhythm repeats and beat is Erie.

    Me & Afsana prefer the Delia Derbyshire version of the Doctor Who beat because it was more dramatic and goes well with the theme however Steven prefers The Orbital version because it is more calming and less irritating.
    What differences did you hear between the two?
    The Delia Derbyshire version is more alien – like, dramatic, gloomy, eerie, spooky & has a faster pace on the other hand, The Orbital tune sounds more, glitchy, screechy a- bit& less eerie.
    What similarities were there?
    The tune was a bit similar and they’re have an alien 👽 effect.

    I preferred the orbit one. This is because it was really relaxing, calm and much better than the other one by Delia Derbyshire.
    What differences did you hear between the two?
    There is a difference it is that from the 1st one by Delia Derbyshire it was really eerie,the sound was slow tempoed it between both of them also i5 is really eerie. However, on the other hand the orbital one is less eerie, more calmer and the beat changes.
    What similarities were there?
    The similarities are that they both have similar sounds, space/ alien theme and the tempo is the same as before.

    For Delia Derbyshire she had a slow paced tempo, with eerie beats,the tone was really loud and the rhythm is really like space/alien theme.
    For the orbit one it is really the same with the eerie sounds, slow paced tempo than before but evan slower,rhythm is the same as before there is no difference except from the tempo and the beats.

    We preferred the orbital because as it is not as sinister and eerie as Delia Derbyshire. However, on the other hand, our friend prefers Delia Derbyshire because it had a nice tune.

    The difference between the two songs was that they didn’t have the same tempo and the pace.
    What similarities were there?
    The similarities were that they both link to Dr. Who and they were both alien-themed.

    Dr.Who
    Through out the Dr. Who song, it had a slow pace throughout the whole song however, the Orbital song kept progressing on pace and tempo.

    Orbital was calm with a thump type beat. It was repetitive

    The differences between Delia and Orbital was that the pitch was igher, tempo was fast and there was a melody in Orbital whereas in Delia it showed suspense.
    The similarities about the both is that they are the same tune.

    2.The differences I heard between the musics were that at the end of the second piece of music they added some different tunes from Delia Derbyshire.

    We prefer Delia Derbyshires one because it creates more suspense and spookiness than the modern version.Also because it is more scary then the modern version .
    What differences did you hear between the two?
    The difference between the turn is that the original version did not have any instruments except for her electronic music and the difference between the other is that that version actually had instruments such as violins,guitars and possibly drums.
    What similarities are there between the two?
    Some of the parts have the same rhythm and have the same tempo and tones.

    Delia
    Delia version had a low tone and the accurate amount of a low pitch
    Delia had a bit more of rhythm with more suspense
    Delia had a Slow tempo which effected the theme
    Delia also had a High pitch

    Yahya-The modern one because became it was more upbeat.
    Hamaad-I preferred the modern one because it was more active and quicker.
    Rajbir-I prefer Delia’s because it had more suspense.
    Umaiza- I preferred the first version of the Doctor Who theme which was made by Delia Derbyshire because it gave me more suspense.
    2.What differences did you hear between the two?
    Umaiza- The differences I heard was that Delia’s version had more spookiness and suspense but with the Modern version, it was a lot of instruments and it was going to fas
    Hamaad-The difference were that the new one has instruments like electric guitars whereas Delia’s was using the radio and different sounds.
    Yahya-The Delia version was more mysterious whilst the modern version
    was more upbeat.
    3.What similarities were there?
    Hamaad-They are the same because they’ve both got some electric music in it.
    Yahya-They both started with the same entry then it changes.
    4.Explain the tone,beats,rhythm and tempo for each version.
    The tone in Delia’s version was louder than the modern version.
    The rhythm in the modern version was more repeated than Delia’s version.
    The tempo in Delia’s version was quite slower than the new version.

    2)The difference I heard was that in the Morden version there were more electric instruments but in Delia’s version there was more of the tape sounds.

    The tone of it was just high then low.
    The beats for the Morden version were repetitive.
    The rhythm for the Morden version was fast.
    The tempo was slow then fast then really fast and then slow again.

    Delia’s version
    The tone was very low and quiet.
    The beats were not repetitive as the Morden version.
    The rhythm was slow.
    The tempo was also slow.

    We both liked Delia Derbyshire’s version because it had more suspense than the Modern version.
    2) What differences did you hear between the two?
    Rajbir-The difference that I heard was that Delia’s had more suspense and the modern version had more beat and was faster.
    Umaiza- The difference that I heard was that Delia’s had more spookiness and it was including suspense but with the Modern version it was very interesting at first but it got fast and I could hear some instruments that we still use today.
    3) What similarities were there?
    Umaiza- The similarities I spotted was that the tune was the same but the Modern version had a bit of a twist to the tune.
    Rajbir-The similarity that I spotted was that both of them had the same tune.

    I prefer Delia version since it’s slow and calm , whereas the modern version is very fast and more spooky in my opinion.

    I liked they Delia version because it is a wired vibes when hearing it for they first time.

    I prefer Delia’s version because in her version there was suspense and you can tell that there are adventures in doctor who?.

    In Delia version she just used tapes but the modern version had more electric instruments.

    2) The differences we found were that the Orbital one used instruments while the Delia Derbyshire one was using tape recorders.

    4) The Delia Derbyshire version’s tone was low, the beats and rhythm were catchy and the tempo was fast and slow at times.

  22. 1)Zain: I prefer the Delia one because it suits the show more it adds more suspense the new one does not match the show because it doesn’t show you what the show is gonna be about.
    Ouzair: I prefer the Delia one because there is a louder tune and it can make you have a bigger imagination of what you think it sounds like.
    2)Zain: the difference I heard between the to theme songs is that the one made by delia was more calm and smooth however the orbit had more of a beat.
    Ouzair: In the new one it doesn’t have that much tempo but, the old one has a lot of tempo.

  23. 1) I prefer Delia’s version, I don’t know why but I just feel that way. Ayomide prefers the orbital one, because it has an upbeat and feels more hip hop.
    2) We hear the difference that the modern one starts off slower and later, gets more hyper. And the modern one has more instruments.
    3) One of the things that were similar that they are both LOUD. And that they have tunes.
    4) Both tones are extremely loud, the rhythms are different from each other and the tempos are decently fast.

  24. 1) I prefer the delia version because it creates lots more suspense than the orbital one which was more modern and less scary.

    2) The differences I heard are that the orbital one sounds more upbeat and it sounds like it’s played with a range of instruments like, guitars, electric pianos and drums, however the delia version sounds more realistic.

    3) The same features they have is that they have the same tune and rhythm.

    4) For the tone, the orbital one sounds more high-pitched, but the delia one sounds deep and low.
    The orbital ones beats sounded faster, whereas the delia version was slower.
    In the orbital one the tempo was going fast at one point but then kept slowing down, after.

  25. 1.We preferred the original one because it sounded more scary and calm (to show that it will scare the kids the smallest bit).
    2.The differences are the Modern and instruments and the old one was made by tapes .
    Alexis- The new one was more hyped and energetic although the original was more calm!
    3.Bolu- The similarities are it was same song but the modern one was more up beat .
    Alexis-The similarities that they both had the same rhythm.
    4. In the modern one the tempo was slow at first but got fast the end ,the tone was very loud.-Bolu
    Alexis-The Tone for the original is low but for the new one it’s high!

  26. 1)We preferred the original version of the theme song of the more because it was spookier and had more suspense.Whereas the modern version we didn’t feel the suspense and spookiness.
