Year 5: Thursday 9th July: Home Learning: English

Good Morning year 5.

Today I would like you to revise some of the SPaG you have learnt this year. To do this I have put a SPaG tests on the blog for you. However, I don’t expect you to do this all on your own. I expect you to use a website to help you study the material.

One of the things you need to learn for SATs, high school, GCSEs and beyond is how to study.

So what is studying? Well it’s a bit different to homework. Homework is a specific task that we set. Studying is reviewing material that has already been taught. Studying can also be learning new material by making notes on it and then practising it by applying it to a problem.

So how do you do it? With today’s task try this: read the question, and if you don’t know the answer to it, or you are unsure, you can use the website I have provided for you and look up what the rules are.

Isn’t that easy? I know all of you can have a go at this!

Website for help: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhrrd2p This has lots of links. Use it to help you revise.

Here’s an example:
“Oh no!!! I’ve forgotten what a relative clause it!”

“I know, I’ll follow the instructions and look at the website, maybe that can help me.”

“Ah well I better open the link and read it!”

“This information can help me answer the question. I will write the sentence in the book and underline the relative clause.”

Now it’s your turn, finish this quiz.

Q. 1/ Write the sentence and add brackets, dashes or commas.
Q.2. Write the sentence and add prefixes to the words after the boxed. Underline the words.

Q.3. Write the question out and write the punctuation that shows parenthesis after it.
Q4. look up modal verbs and think about what could fit here. Does she need to know about the subject in this sentence.

Q. 5 Write the word in your book and then write a dash next to it and write which type of word it is. EG table – noun

Q6 All you have to do is rewrite the sentence with the incorrect spelling changed to have the correct suffix.
Q7 Write out the paragraph and underline the relative clauses you find.

Q8 Write the sentence and fill in the blanks using one of the options below.

Q9 Rewrite the sentence with commas.
Q10 Write the sentence and underline the words that make it into a question.

    • On question 1 you have missed a comma, remember you need 2 for a relative clause.
Also there is a small mistake in question 3. The statement below states “We don’t want her to know about this” thus it implies a negative modal verb.
