Year 5: Who was Charles Darwin?

We have been studying evolution today and the father of the theory of evolution: Charles Darwin.  Now we would like you to find out some key information about his life and his work.

TASK: Produce a fact file about the life of Charles Darwin. You must post this as a comment on the blog. You can use bullet points for some short key facts but you MUST include at least one paragraph, with full sentences, describing a part of his life or work.

Questions:

  • Why and how did he come to studying biology?
  • What islands did he visit? How did this help him write his book?
  • What was his book called? When was it published? How long did it take him to write it?
  • Can you summarise his theory of natural selection?
  • What problems occurred because of his work? Who liked it? Who didn't? Why did they disagree?
  • What was his family like?

  11. Natural selection is when something is born but with a personal appearance sometimes it’s good for them but sometimes it’s not good. Sometimes there children will have the same appearance as there parents. For e.g if you had a giraffe whith a long neck and a short neck which one would live the long neck so the short one would stop being born.Thats what the summery of natural selection is.Charles Darwin did not learn about biology and natural history.

  14. Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. He was born in 12 February 1809 at The Mount, Shrewsbury and died in 19 April 1882 at Down House, Downe. He found out about the evolution of mankind and his research on natural selection.Darwin’s theory of evolution explains how species of living things have changed over the time. The theory is supported by evidence from fossils, and by the rapid changes that can be seen to occur in so many ways. Many species have become extinct in the past and the extinction of species continues to happen. He disagreed with the church as he didn’t think god would have created the world in 7 days. In fact, he thought that evolution started the world. The basic idea behind the theory of evolution is that all the different species have evolved from simple life forms. These simple life forms first developed more than three billion years ago – the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. The first species on Earth were single celled organisms. But through the huge amount of time, the world developed from these organs to fish. Fish then started to adapt legs and walk on land. After that, the fishes turned bigger and bigger until they became apes and chimpanzees. These species developed arms and slowly turned in to humans.
