Year 5’s Visit to the Black Country Museum

Today, the children had the opportunity to go back into time by visiting the Black. Country Museum. They learned and experienced what it was like during the Victorian era by visiting homes, the coal mines, shops and the local school. They had a super day and represented the school beautifully. Well done.

Take a look at the videos and photographs below and please answer the questions.

  1. How did you find learning in a Victorian School? How was it different to today’s learning?
  2. Compare three things that are different today compared to the Victorian homes?
  3. How has fuel energy evolved over the years?

    1. How did u find learning in a Victorian school? How was it different to today’s learning?
I found learning in a Victorian school is scary and kinda creepy to.
Victorian school’s used to give students punishments if they do something wrong and today’s school is easier if u get in trouble u go in the traffic lights and it’s better than the Victorian school.

    2. Compare three things that are different today compared to the Victorian homes?
In Victorian homes, they didn’t have straight house’s and they were made in coal and they had chimney which smokes out if u put coal in the fire place.

    3. How was fuel energy evolved over the years?
In the Victorian times, fuel energy was used a lot but some didn’t use it a lot and they invented the electricity which made people happy but some weren’t.

I wasn’t able to go to the school
In Victorian homes was they used newspaper as toilet paper and most of the houses were made out of wood however the rich peoples houses were made out of iron. However now our houses are mostly made out of bricks and not iron or wood and we also use toilet paper for our toilet paper not newspapers.

The fuel has evolved because they used to use coal and used trains but now we use cars that run on engines not coal however now coal is still useful

    1) The difference between Victorian schools and modern day schools is that in the Victorian times there classroom will have a fireplace but nowadays we have central heating. In the Victorian times the teacher will hit the student with a cane and call them a dunce but know we have traffic lights and the behaviour books. In the Victorian times they used to tie you left hand and the will force you to use your right but know you can choose which hand you want to write with.
    2) The difference between Victorian homes and modern day homes are that nowadays people flush there

      Continued
there toilets but in the Victorian times they used to just chuck it. In the Victorian times they used to have a fireplace but nowadays we have central heating. In the Victorian times they used to have no electricity so they had to use candles light up the house when it is dark nowy we have light switches to lighten up the house.
      3) Before we used coal and candles to lighten up the house but now we use electricity

    1. Victorian schools are different to today’s schools because if you got an answer wrong, you could get hit with a paddle.
    2.
•Rich Victorians had a parlour room which was like a living room. But now, almost every house has one.
•Most Victorian houses had chimneys because they had fireplaces. Nowadays not much houses have any chimneys as there are now radiators.
•Most Victorian houses didn’t have a garage because cars were invented around the end of the Victorian era
    3. In the early Victorian era, oil was used, but, near the end of the Victorian era, electricity was invented.

    1. In the schools in the Victorian era the teachers were very strict and would punish you with a cane on the hand or at the bottom of your legs. School compared to the Victorian schools today are different because we have different subjects like art, science , smsc, topic and pshe.

    2. Three different things that are different to victorian house and today were that in there houses they had tin baths and today the have baths made out of a better material . Another difference is that the didnt have toilets instead they used a bucket , but today we actually have proper toilets . One more difference is that the fireplace was the most important thing in the house because you needed the fire place to cook , warm the place , have a bath and get rid of cockroaches.

    3. Fuel has evolved for the past few years because in the Victorian era they used coal and in our time we use electricity. We also use elecrticity to power trains and other vehicles.
