Which came first the chicken or the egg?
It’s that old riddle that caused arguments over the ages, was it the chicken or the egg that came first? it’s such a tricky question because you need a chicken to lay eggs but, chickens come from eggs. Leaving us with an unanswerable question.

Thankfully there’s no need to keep contemplating about this anymore this is a riddle we can unscramble with tools of science.

    Let’s get cracking.

    The first eggs.
Eggs are found throughout the animal kingdom technologically speaking, eggs are a vessel which an embryo can grow and develop until it can survive on it’s own.

But let’s focus on the type of bird eggs we recognise today. These first came on the scene with the evolution of the first amniotes many millions of years ago.Prior to their arrival, most animals relied on water for reproduction, laying their eggs in ponds and other moist environments so that their eggs didn’t dry out.

At some point a different type of egg began to evolve, which had three extra membranes inside: the chorion, amnion and Allantois. Each membrane has a slightly different function the embryo could take in stored nutrients this increased the eggs survival rate. Amniotic eggs were a huge deal they opened up a whole new world of opportunity for land- based egg-laying locations.

    The first chickens.
The very first chickens would have been a result of a genetic mutation taking place in a zygote produced by proto chickens this means they mated combining their DNA together to form the very first cell of the very first chicken.

The likely parents of the very first chicken were the red jungle fowl is native to a range of south – eastern Asia countries including India, Singapore, southern China, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the red jungle fowl was first domesticated 10,000 years ago, although DNA analysis and mathematical simulations suggest that the domestic chickens acctually diverged from the jungle fowl much earlier (58,00 years ago).

Eggs certainly came before chickens but chicken eggs did not, you can’t have one without the other.however if we absolutely had to pick a side it based on evolutionary evidence, where on team egg.

Did you know? that chickens are related to the most powerful dinosaur the infamous t-rex.
