This week in Maths we have moved on from Place Value to our unit on Addition and Subtraction. We have started exploring addition using the formal written method, including questions that involve exchange.

You have all impressed me so much with how good you are at spotting mistakes in the column layout and addition process – can you help me again?

These four children have worked out 4,635 + 183, but only one of them is correct.

Who has done the addition correctly?

What mistakes have the other three children made?

    Alex is right. Other mistack is they put 183 in the Wrong column. Roise mistack is she put the 11 in the box. she ment to put one of the Hundreds Under the Thousands.

    Alex is correct. Rosie and Jack are incorrect because they did not exchange properly. Teddy is wrong because he put 183 in the wrong columns.

    Rosie have added the one that you put underneath in the ones column which makes it look like they had another digit but then you will do millions.

    Alex is correct because he added up correctly and exchanged.
    Rosie and Jack should have exchanged the 11 to the Hundreds.
    Teddy should have started the 3 digit number from the Ones.
