5Blue- Separating mixtures

The children in Year 5 helped the teachers today when some materials were accidentally mixed up!

The children made suggestions about how the materials could be separated and discussed if the change was reversible or not.

What does reversible mean?

We discussed method of separation and decided on sieving, filtering and Evaporating.

Challenge: How did you separate each of the mixtures?

We have left the Salt and water mix on the window sill- why? What do we predict will happen?

Reversible means that something is turning the other way round
    Salt water-it needs sun
Tea leaves and water -filter paper
    Rice in water-sieve
    Flour and paper clips-magnetism

Reversible means it you can turn something back to what it originally was.e.g. Rice and Water
Ireversible mess we can’ t turn something back to what it originally was.e.g tea leaves and water

We predict that the water will evaporate
