This half term we are learning about the Victorians. Can you complete a Victorian money challenge using the information you have been given?

Bronze: The chimney sweep has earnt 4 silver 6 pence for his day’s work. How much has he earnt in total? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Silver: In my purse I have 3 sovereigns  and 2 florins, how much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Gold: Which amount of money is higher 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.

Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.

    £1 was worth 240 pence and you could have buyed gas coal power and new things like new equipment and £1 is worth 100 pence you could buy milk butter chocolate and in Victorian time bread would cost 2 shillings

    If you have 3 sovereign and 4florins in your purse this how you would work it out
    sovereign is 1pound and florin is 2shlillngs so you do 2+2that equal 4

    You have 324 pense.I know this because 1 shilling is 12 pence and then times that by 2 equals 24.and then 1 sovereign is 1 pound and then times that by 3 is 3 pound.

    I used my times tables and did 1×3=3 and 2×2=4. £3 and 4 shillings

    I used my times tables and I did 21×3=63 so 3 guineas is the most amount of money.

      I think together it will be £1 4 shillings and twelve because a sovereign is a pound and and two florins is 4 shillings and twelve pence.

    Silver:
    300+24=324 You have 3 pounds and 24 pence. I know this because 1 sovereign is a pound and 3 times the amount is 3 pound. One florin is 2 shillings. 1 shilling is 12 pence but we need to do 2 times the amount which makes 24.

    Gold:
    10×12=120 I think that three guinea has a bigger value than 10 shillings. I know 3×21=63 this because one shilling is twelve pence and 10×12 is 120. 3×21 is 63 63×12=756 and we need to times it by 12 which makes 756.

    Platinum:
    A pound from the victorian era would now cost round 600 pounds today. This is why you could probably buy an old horse with one pound in the victorian era, however, you can only buy a lollipop or sweet with one pound today. Think that a loaf of bread cost them about 4 pence in the victorian era.

    I think 10 shillings is bigger than 3 Guinea because 1 Shilling is 12 pence and if you have ten of those you get 120 Shillings and 1 pound is 20 Shillings and 120 Shillings = £6. 1 Guinea is 21 shilling and 3 of those are 63 Guinea and 63 Guinea = 3 pounds 3 pence.

    1 silver is 6 pence but he earns 4 silvers so we need to do 6+6+6+6 which is 24 and then add 6 because

    21 X 3=63=GUINEA [1 guinea is worth 1 pound 5 pence so 5 x 10=50][100x 10 =1000] 1050 pence
    I think 3 guinea is more because 1050 is more than 120 shillings which is [each shilling is worth 5p 120 x 5 =600.]
    the diiference is 1050-600=450.

    You have 3 sovereigns and 4 florins because we know that £1 is a sovereign and that 1 florin is 2 pence so for the sovereigns
    part you just need to add on 2 more sovereigns to make 3 sovereigns which now is called £3 and for the florins part we know that 1 florin is 2 pence so we just need to put on 1 more florin to make it 4 florins and so doing that will get you the answer of 3 sovereigns and 4 florins.
