    Timeline of the Victorian Empire
    24 May 1819 | Victoria is born
Born at Kensington Palace and christened Alexandrina Victoria, the baby princess took her place as a potential heir to the throne.
20 June 1837 | Victoria ascends to the throne
After the death of King William IV on 20 June 1837, his 18-year-old niece was given the title the Queen of England. She became heir to the throne as her three uncles ahead of her in the line of succession – George IV, Frederick Duke of York, and William IV – had no legitimate children who survived.

The coronation ceremony took place on the 28 June and was held in Westminster Abbey after a procession through the streets from Buckingham Palace. It is thought over 400,000 visitors arrived for the coronation.

    Queen Victoria, 1819 – 1901
    Queen Victoria, 1819 – 1901

1 August 1838 | Slavery abolished in the British Empire
While slavery was abolished in the British Empire on 1 August 1834, only children under the age of six were freed immediately under the terms of the 1833 Emancipation Act.

All other former slaves were bound as ‘apprentices,’ where they continued to work without pay for their former owners. When the apprenticeship period ended in 1838, over 700,000 slaves were freed in the British Caribbean. Plantation owners received nearly £20 million in government compensation for the loss of their slaves. The former slaves received nothing.

Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as an enigmatic and highly intelligent consulting detective who lives at 221B Baker Street in London. His character is brought to life through the narration of his close friend and companion, Dr. John Watson, who documents their adventures together. Holmes is described as having a tall, thin frame, with sharp, angular features, including a prominent nose and piercing, analytical eyes. His demeanor is often calm and composed, but he can become intensely focused and energetic when pursuing a case.

Holmes is a master of observation and deduction, often noticing details that others overlook and using them to solve seemingly unsolvable crimes. He is known for his scientific approach to detective work, employing methods such as fingerprint analysis, chemical experiments, and logical reasoning. His intellect is matched by his eccentricities—he is prone to bouts of boredom when not engaged in a challenging case, during which he plays the violin, conducts experiments, or even turns to substances like cocaine to stimulate his mind.

Despite his sometimes cold and detached exterior, Holmes has a strong moral compass and a deep sense of justice. He is fiercely dedicated to solving crimes and often goes to great lengths to ensure that the guilty are brought to justice. His partnership with Dr. Watson is central to the stories, as Watson’s grounded and empathetic nature provides a counterbalance to Holmes’ more aloof personality. Watson’s admiration for Holmes is evident in his narration, and their friendship is one of the most enduring aspects of the series.

Holmes’ adventures, such as A Study in Scarlet, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Adventure of the Speckled Band, showcase his brilliance and make him one of literature’s most enduring and beloved characters. His catchphrase, “Elementary, my dear Watson,” though not actually found in the original texts, has become synonymous with his genius and deductive prowess.
