A Ramble Along The Canal – 5B!

As part of our Geography learning this half term, the children are exploring ‘Rivers’. We posed the children with the question – ‘Is a canal a type of river?’ and set them the challenge of exploring this in our local area.

We had a wonderful sunny morning exploring our local Coventry Canal today. The children chartered their journey from Broad Heath to the Canal Basin, and enjoyed catching glimpses of the canal on the way. Once we arrived at the Canal Basin, we discussed the historical and current uses of narrowboats, linking the coal mining trade with the economy of Coventry. We then read about James Brindley, ‘The father of the canals’. We found a brilliant mosaic that outlined the rich tapestry of the city’s History, and the children enjoyed identifying familiarities within this. We walked back to school via the canal towpath, and compared the journey of a river to the journey of a canal.

Can you tell me you conclusions to the big question? What evidence do you have? How do you know?

A canal can be known as an artificial river. Evidence for this is that rivers are natural but canals are made for reasons such as water transport. Also, rivers and canals look different. I know this because we have learnt about canals and rivers, rivers flow due to gravity but canals don’t.
