Y1 Maths Challenge – Spring 1

  • Picture of Miss Smith Miss Smith
  • January 7, 2025

Hi Year 1,

Please choose a challenge to complete. You can complete more than one if you wish! Please write your answers on this blog or in your Homework book. Winners will be announced at the end of term. Good luck!

BRONZE

SILVER

GOLD

N.B. At Broad Heath, we call ‘base ten’ dienes.

Instead of dienes (base ten) at home, you could use dried spaghetti and pasta or twigs and stones to represent the tens and ones. Be creative!

To make 11 you need one tens and one ones.
To make 12 you need 1 tens and 2 ones
To make 13 you need 1 tens and 3 ones
To make 14 you need 1 tens and 4 ones.
To make 15 you need 1 tens and 5 ones.
To make 16 you need 1 tens and 6 ones.
To make 17 you need 1 tens and 7 ones.
To make 18 you need 1 tens and 8 ones
To make 19 you need 1 tens and 9 ones.

The answer is 15 because it can not be equally devided by 2.

Ben can make numbers 11 and 12.

Erica does not have any 10 sticks so she can’t make any number. 0

    Anna can make numbers 16, 17, 18 and 19

I made the number 20 using base 10 equipment. I put 10 cubes on the left hand side and 10 counters on the right hand side.

    For the gold challenge.

Ben can make numbers 11 and 12.

Erica does not have any 10 sticks so she can’t make any numbers, so the answer is 0.

    Anna can make numbers 16, 17, 18 and 19

I made the number 20 using base 10 equipment. I put 10 pasta shells on the left hand side and 10 jelly beans on the right hand side.

For the silver challenge, the odd one out is the numocon, this is because it has 10 plus 5 which equals 15 and the tens and ones for this task is 16.
