Year 3 Maths Challenge Spring 2

BRONZE:

A plant’s roots are 12cm deep underground. The stem on top is 14cm tall.

What is the length plant altogether?

SILVER:

Convert the height of the different trees into metres. Remember there are 100cm in a metre.

GOLD:

1. I have 2 square shaped allotments. Allotment one is 8m long and allotment two is 12m long. a. What is the perimeter of each allotment? b. What is the difference in perimeter of the allotments?

2. I am going to build a wooden fence around allotment two. It cost £8 per metre of wood. How much would it cost to buy the wood for the whole fence?

3. The wood goes on sale and is reduced to £5 per metre. a. How much will it cost if I buy it now? b. How much money will I save?

PLATINUM:

Drawings of different sized allotments have been given to a gardener.  He needs to know which allotment will fit the type of tree.

Can you help him by calculating the perimeter of each enclosure?

Which enclosure would be suited for which plants?

    Length of the plant is 26cm.
    12 has one ten and two ones
    14 has one ten and four ones
    That is how I added the numbers.

  2. Anish B.

    Bronze:
    12 cm deep+14 cm tall = total length of plant is 26 cms

    Silver:
    Maple – 173cm = 1m 73 cm
    Crab Apple – 179cm = 1m 79 cm
    Snow Gun – 184 = 1m 84 cm
    Cercis – 165 = 1m 65 cm
    Oak – 197 = 1m 97 cm

  3. Delilah R.

    1. I have 2 square shaped allotments. Allotment one is 8m long and allotment two is 12m long. a. What is the perimeter of each allotment? b. What is the difference in perimeter of the allotments

    The allotments are
    4mx8m=32m
    And
    12mx4m=48

    The difference is
    48m_32m=16m

    2. I am going to build a wooden fence around allotment two. It cost £8 per metre of wood. How much would it cost to buy the wood for the whole fence?
    48×8 =464pound

    3. The wood goes on sale and is reduced to £5 per metre. a. How much will it cost if I buy it now? b. How much money will I save?

    48×5=240pound

    That means you will save 224pound because

    464_240=224

    Oak..= 6×20 =120

    Gold:
    1. I have 2 square shaped allotments. Allotment one is 8m long and allotment two is 12m long.

    a. What is the perimeter of each allotment?
    The perimeter for allotment one is 32m. I know this because 4 x 8m = 32m.

    The perimeter for allotment two is 48m. I know this because 4 x 12m = 48m.

    The number 4 in my sum is the number of sides that my square shaped allotment has.

    b. What is the difference in perimeter of the allotments?

    The difference in perimeter of the allotments is 16m. I know this because to find the difference between allotment one and allotment two, I need to subtract 48m from 32m. The sum is 48m – 32m = 16m.

    2. I am going to build a wooden fence around allotment two. It cost £8 per metre of wood. How much would it cost to buy the wood for the whole fence?

    It would cost £384.00 to buy the wood for the whole fence. I know this because I will need to multiply £8 by the perimeter of allotment two. The sum is £8 x 48m = £384.00.

    3. The wood goes on sale and is reduced to £5 per metre.

    a. How much will it cost if I buy it now?

    It would cost £240.00 to buy the wood for the whole fence. I know this because I will need to multiply £5 by the perimeter of allotment two. The sum is £5 x 48m = £240.00.

    b. How much money will I save?

    I will save £144.00. I know this because £384.00 – £240.00 = £144.00.

      Enclosure 3 = 120m perimeter, suitable for the Conifer tree.
