Year 4 Maths Challenge – Spring 1 2024

  • Picture of Mrs Khaliq Mrs Khaliq
  • January 8, 2024

Here is a plan for a new zoo that will be opening in 2024.

Bronze

Calculate the perimeter for the following animal enclosures in squares and ensure you show the calculations.

Example:

The koala enclosure perimeter is 3 +8+3+8=22 squares

What is the perimeter of these enclosures?

  1. Panda
  2. Giraffe
  3. Penguins
  4. Rhino
  5. Snake

Silver

Which animal has the enclosure with the longest perimeter?

Which animal has the enclosure with the shortest perimeter?

Gold

Each square on the plan is equivalent to 1 metre.

Platinum

You have been asked to design a new zoo for the community! You have been given specific building requirements to follow. Make sure you use squared paper and a ruler!

Each enclosure has 4 sides and here are the measurements in squares. Calculate the perimeter for the animals and draw the enclosures ensuring you label them.

You need to plan out the second row of enclosures and write your chosen perimeters and calculations.

Bring your completed zoos with perimeter measurements into school.

The enclosure with the biggest length is the Rhino because 16+16=32. The animals with the smallest enclosures are the snake and the Penguin because they both have 18 square perimeters only.
Gold nobody us correct because Alex thought the meters were cm and cm were meters . Mo is wrong because 22m is not bigger than 2400 cm ,2400 cm equals 24 m.

    The perimeter of the Panda’s Exhibit is 24 squares . I know this because I know 5 + 5 = 10 and 7 + 7 = 14 . If you add them together you will get 24.
    The perimeter of the Giraffes Exhibit Is also 24 squares . I know this because 3 + 3 = 6 and 9 + 9 = 18 if you add them together you will 24 again get 24.
The perimeter of the Penguins Exhibit is 30 squares . I know this because 5 + 10 = 15 and 5 + 10 is also 15 If you add them together you get 30
    The perimeter of the Rhinos Exhibit is 32 squares .I know this because 4 + 4 = 8 and 12 + 12 = 24 add them up and you get 32.
The Perimeter of the Snakes Exhibit is squares. I know this because 3 + 3 = 6 and 6 + 6 = 12 add them up and you get 18
    Gold 🥇
Mo is correct because Alex probably thought that we were measuring in kilometres (km) and then converted 16km into 1600m but Mo is right because the walruses perimeter is 22 because I know 3 + 3 = 6 and 8 + 8 = 16 and The perimeter of the Panda’s Exhibit is 24 squares . I know this because I know 5 + 5 = 10 and 7 + 7 = 14 . If you add them together you will get 24.
