Year 4 Maths Challenge – Spring 1 2024

  • Picture of Mrs Khaliq Mrs Khaliq
  • January 8, 2024

Here is a plan for a new zoo that will be opening in 2024.

Bronze

Calculate the perimeter for the following animal enclosures in squares and ensure you show the calculations.

Example:

The koala enclosure perimeter is 3 +8+3+8=22 squares

What is the perimeter of these enclosures?

  1. Panda
  2. Giraffe
  3. Penguins
  4. Rhino
  5. Snake

Silver

Which animal has the enclosure with the longest perimeter?

Which animal has the enclosure with the shortest perimeter?

Gold

Each square on the plan is equivalent to 1 metre.

Platinum

You have been asked to design a new zoo for the community! You have been given specific building requirements to follow. Make sure you use squared paper and a ruler!

Each enclosure has 4 sides and here are the measurements in squares. Calculate the perimeter for the animals and draw the enclosures ensuring you label them.

You need to plan out the second row of enclosures and write your chosen perimeters and calculations.

Bring your completed zoos with perimeter measurements into school.

    Silver: The animal that has the longest perimeter is the rhino because it has a perimeter of 32. The animal that has the shortest perimeter is the snake because it has a perimeter of 18.

    Gold: Alex is incorrect because the elephant has a meter of 20m(2000cm)and the parrot has a meter of16m(1600cm)and 20m is bigger than 16m so the elephant has the biggest meter and the parrot doesn’t.

    Silver:
    The biggest perimeter is the Zebra.
    The smallest perimeter is the snake.
    Gold:
    Mo is correct because the walrus is 22m and 2400 is equal to 24m.24m is more than 22m.
    However Alex is incorrect. I know this because the parrot has the perimeter of 1600 which is equivalent to 16m.She said that it is bigger than the elephant enclosure which is 20m. So that’s how I know that Alex is incorrect.

    The animal with the shortest perimeter is the turtle.
    Gold
    Mo is correct because he said 22m is less than 2400cm and because 1m=100cm that means 2400cm is 24m.
    Alex is wrong because she said 1600cm is bigger than 20m but 1m=100cm so that means 20m is 2000cm which is bigger than 1600cm so she is wrong.

    Panda=5+7+5+7=24squars
    Giraffe=3+9+3+9=24squars
    Penguin=10+5+10+5=30squars
    Rhino=12+4+12+4=32squars
    Snake=8+3+8+3=22squars

    Silver:
    Rhino has the biggest perimeter because it was 32squars.
    Snake has the smallest perimeter because it was 22squars.

    Gold:
    I agree with Mo because if you convert 2400cm into metre it is 24m so 22m is smaller than 24m.

    Gold:
    Alex is wrong because parrots have 1600cm and elephants have 2000 so Alex is wrong
    Ron is right because walrus 2200cm and panda is 2400 so Ron is right
