  • Picture of Mr Kane Mr Kane
  • January 7, 2024

Hi Year 5,

This half term we are learning about the Victorians. Can you complete a Victorian money challenge using the information you have been given?

Bronze:Β The chimney sweep has earned 4 Silver Sixpence for his day’s work. How much has he earned in total? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Silver: In my purse, I have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins. How much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.

Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.

    Bronze:
Per day a chimney sweeper earns 24pence,
I know this because a sixpence is six pence
they get four of those and if you calculate 6×4 the whole answer is 24.
    Silver:
Three pound and 24 pence because
3 pound is 3 Sovereign and 2 Fliorin is 2 shillings which is twelve pence.
    Gold:
3 Guniueas is larger than 10 shillings because 21 shillings is one Gueani.

    Bronze:
24 pence because one silver six pence is 6 pence and 4*6=24 .

    Silver:
You have three pounds and 24 pence because three sovereigns is three pounds and 2 florins is 24 pence so it is three pounds and 24 pence.

    Gold:
Three Guineas is higher because three guineas is equivalent to seven pounds and fifty six pence and ten shillings is equivalent to one pound and twenty pence.

    The chimney sweep has earned 24p. I know this because 4 x 6 = 24.

    Silver
    You have Β£3.24p. I know this because a sovereign is Β£1 so it is Β£3. A florin is 2 shillings (a shilling is 12p) so 12 + 12 = 24and then you add Β£3 + 24p = Β£3.24p.

    Gold
10 shillings is equivalent to 120p or Β£1.20p
3 guineas is equivalent to 756p or Β£7.56p
3 guineas is greater than 10 shillings. I know this because 3 guineas is worth 756p or Β£7.56p and 10 shillings is worth 120p or Β£1.20p.

    Bronze:
The answer is 24p because silver sixpence is the same as 6p and 6Γ—4=24.
    Silver:
The answer is Β£3.24 because 1 sovereign is equal to 1 pound so 3 sovereigns is 3 pound.
I florin is 2 shillings and 1 shilling is 12 pence so 2 shillings is 24 pence because 12Γ—2=24.
    So 2 florins is 24p. Therefore, Β£3+24p=Β£3.24.

He earned 24 pence in total. I know this because 1 silver Sixpence is 6 pence. So, 6×4 is 24.
    Silver

She has Β£3.48. I know this because a sovereigns is Β£1 and Β£1×3 = Β£3 and a florin is 2 shillings and 1 shilling is 12 pence so, 2 shillings is 24, if you times 24 by 2 it is 48 pence. Therefore 2 florins is 48 pence. Now, if you add Β£3 and 48pence it makes Β£3.48.

    Gold
    —————–
3 Guinea is higher than 10 Shillings
I know that 3 Guinea is greater because, 1 guinea is 21 shillings and 21×12 is 252 pence and if we times it by 3 the answer will be 756 pence. I also know that 10 shillings is smaller because 1 shilling is 12 pence and 12×10 is 120 so, 10 shillings is 120 pence. That’s why I know 3 Guinea is greater.

    1. In victorian times 1 pound=20 shillings which means 1 pound=20×12 pence=240 pence.
    Today 1 pound=100 pence.
Now we can buy 1 kilogram apples for 1 pound which means 100 pence . With the same value Victorians might have
    bought 2.4 kilograms of apples.
    2.It is not same today.
    3. Now a big loaf of bread costs 1 pound. In victorian days 2 big and a small loaf of bread would
    cost for 1 pound.

The chimney sweep has earned 24 pence. I know this because 1 Sliver sixpence is equivalent to 6 pence. This chimney sweep has earned 4 Silver Sixpence. You can add six onto itself four times, but the easiest method is the one I did, which was to multiply 6 by 4 or 4 by 6.

    Silver:
    You have Β£3.24.
1 sovereign is equivalent to Β£1.00. Therefore, 3 sovereigns are equivalent to Β£3.00. A florin is 2 shillings. A shilling is equal to 12 pence. So, 2 shillings is equal to 24 pence. If you put Β£3.00 and 24 pence together, it will make Β£3.24

    Gold:
10 shillings is greater. I know this because I have done 3 x 21, which is 63. This is as 1 Guinea is 21. One shilling is 12. Because we need 10 shillings, you do. 10 x 12, which is 120. So 10 shillings is greater.

    Platinum:
    1. Items costing Β£1 in 1869 would cost Β£121.73 today.
    2. A pound is not the same as Victorian times. It would be worth Β£121.73 today because it was very old and there are not much around.
    3. Break in the Victorian times would be six Shillings and 2 or 3 pence. Now, a loaf of bread costs Β£1.35 or over! In Victorian currency, that would be 1 Guinea, 1 Florin and 2 Sliver Sixpence.
