Year 5 Reading Challenge – Spring 1 2024

  • Picture of Mr Kane Mr Kane
  • January 7, 2024

Hi Year 5,

This half term  we have been learning about the Victorians in History.  We would like you to use your inference skills to interpret some pictures of Queen Victoria. Some of you will also need to complete a researching task as part of your reading challenge. ALL RESEARCH MUST BE WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS! Answer the questions in full and present your information in full sentences.

A starting point for your research:

Firstly, look at these pictures of Queen Victoria:

BRONZE: What can you tell me about Queen Victoria from looking at these images? Look for some other images of her on the internet. What else can you work out about her? What was she like as a Queen?

SILVER: Are these primary or secondary sources of information? What do they tell you about Queen Victoria? Do some additional research into Queen Victoria. What kind of Queen was she? Does this support or disprove what you originally thought from looking at the pictures?

GOLD: Are these pictures primary or secondary sources of information? Does this make them more or less reliable? Why? What kind of Queen was she? Find some more information on Queen Victoria. Does this support or disprove what you originally thought from looking at the pictures? In what way?

Sorry I had accidentally pressed the send button.
    Silver
I think both because of the format it has been written in and the words that have been used. She mourned black for 30 years after her beloved husband passed.
    Gold
I think both again hence in the pictures she mourned black for 30 years (so the same as silver).

Queen Victoria looks very healthy,trustworthy,smart,intelligent,warm-hearted and hard working. In these pictures and paintings she looks quite miserable and it looks like she mourned black.
    Silver
I think primary and secondary I suggest this because

This is a secondary source of information It says that she was the longest serving monarchy until Queen Elizabeth II but still was an important queen.
She was the first royal member to live at the Buckingham palace. Before becoming queen her mother helped her see how ordinary people lived their lives by taking her on a tour of England.
.She was a warm-hearted and lively.
I disapprove because she is a warm-hearted maiden.

Queen Victoria had a lot of pets. She liked pets. She got the throne at a young age. 18. She was pretty slash beautiful and she mostly had her dogs with her. She had something on her head all the time. Queen Victoria rarely smiled on her portrait. She was very tiny. Queen Victoria was very stubborn and she was. a bit strict. She also lived a long life. I can tell by most of these images that I can tell by most of these images that they were done in the olden days which were black , and white

3.I think that she was strict and cruel as a queen.

3.She was a strong and brave woman. I think this is because she has survived seven assassination attempts.
4.I disapprove from what I originally thought from what I saw from the pictures because I saw on the internet that she was not cruel but she felt sad because her husband prince Albert died.

I think she is very nice and she doesn’t shout a lot by the pictures or panting. By looking at the pictures Ican tell u she was happy or maybe rude and she rarely smiled or looked happy at all.i think she was very very nice as a queen and she knows that people couldn’t afford school.

    Bronze:
Queen Victoria would rarely smile in a
picture or painting. Even though she almost
never smiles in a picture and painting she
is a warm-hearted and lively lady.

      Silver:
It might be a primary source because it tells
me the reason why she was sad all the time
      (After 1864).
      Gold:
These pictures are primary because they tell why Queen Victoria was so angry.
These pictures are more reliable because
number one it is a picture of a Queen and
number 2 it would be very useful to use to be able to learn about her fashion and feeling when looking at it
