Year 6 Debate: Are most natural disasters man-made today?

Good morning year 6!

Following on from our latest unit of writing I would like to ask you a question: Are most natural disasters man-made today?

I would love to hear your opinions in the comments below! Remember to try to use a variety of conjunctions. I have given an example below. Please reply to comments with relevant contrasting evidence and create a fair and interesting debate in the comments!

Example:

There are many reasons as to why people believe that humans are not responsible for causing natural disasters. It has been found that natural disasters date back to at least 526AD. The third most deadly earthquake (on record) was measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale: this took place in Syria during the Byzantine Empire. It is safe to say that during this time period humans were unable to contribute to ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’ due to their lack of carbon emissions. Furthermore, scientists claim tectonic activity was far more frequent in prehistoric times, than it is today. This information links closely to the cause of the Damghan Earthquake in Iran (856AD).

Firstly, humans are consuming too many fossil fuels from factories ,this is then causing a change in global warming patterns.

On the other hand, experts evidence from NASA has claimed that the moon can lead to potential natural disasters due to speeds of orbits planet earth.

Yet,deforestation impacts animals habitats and environment and also disrupts the water cycle.

However, due to tectonic movement within the earths core natural disasters caused secure fatalities.

I think sometimes humans can can cause natural disasters as humans are the ones letting out all of bad gases. But I also think that they could happen on there own.

    Checked:
(Yalda)Firstly, We have impacting the Earth in a very costly way. This is because, we have been causing deforestation for farmland, buildings and homes. Due to the deforestation, the water cycle has been disrupted which has caused the chance of floods to increase as the trees take in much water but if they are not there the water has nowhere to go which causes floods to occur. (Roma)In addition, scientists are arguing that natural disasters are a combination of the Earth and human factors.Humans are destroying natural land really quickly meaning an increased chance of natural disasters has occurred. Soil can become covered by cement meaning the soil can not receive the nutrients it needs.

One one hand, natural disasters have been defined into three categories: hydrological, meteorological and geological. Us gunman’s have been consuming by deforestation and pollution the forest/seas. Moreover, fossil fuels have been released in the ozone layer, which means gases that aren’t good for us, can kill the whole of humanity. As a result of this, this could change the global weather pattern. Finally, scientist have proven that humans are making way for urbanisation, agriculture and the ecology could change.

On the contrary, due to shifts in tectonic plates several geological disasters have occurred. Over the years, long-term climate changes can significantly impact soil. When sloped areas are completely saturated water, landslides mainly occur. Therefore, when earthquakes strikes areas where steep slopes, landslides can also happen.

I believe humans do not cause natural disasters because long long times ago examples of this is the earthquake in Asia in 526 ad an earthquake on the reactor scale it was 7.9 making it the third most deadliest earthquake but at this time there were little to carbon gases so we do not cause natural disasters it even proves befor this natural disasters mean the accur on natural not unartral

  6. Safya S.

Having considered both sides of the argument, there are many reasons as to why I think humans cause the increases of natural disasters. Activities such as : chopping down trees, areas made out of peat soil and poor zoning regulations can cause this. Humans and large companies are effecting major disasters such as global warming and climate change. This all is relative to why humans do cause natural disasters.

  7. Iqra

There are many reasons as to why people believe that humans are not responsible for causing natural disasters. They date back to at least 526AD. The third most lethal earthquake (on record) was placed 7.9 on the Richter Scale! It took place in Syria and Antioch during the Byzantine Empire. During this period humans were unable to contribute to ‘Climate Change’ and ‘ Global Warming’ due to the lack of carbon emissions. Furthermore, scientists claim tectonic activity was far more frequent in prehistoric times than it is today. This information links closely to cause of the Damghan Earthquake in Iran (856AD). When investigated, it was found out that this earthquake was created by the Sysmic activity of tectonic plates crashing to make mountains. The earthquake had a death toll of 200,000 and it affected 200 miles of Iran.
Moreover, NASA has found out that planets in space have extreme weather. Humans do not contribute to natural disasters in space. Mercury has magnetic tornadoes that connect to magnetic fields in space. Humans do not live on Mercury so how can we impact natural disasters in space. Similarly, there are exoplanets in space that have extreme weather- not even our solar system-. WASP-43b has winds that howl at the speed of sound. Jupiter has the Red spot hurricane that has been going on for thousands of years. So we (humans) are not the main cause for natural disasters.- Iqra

Research carried out by C.R.E.D (centre of research of epidemiology of disasters )claims that over 19 between 1994-2013 indicates that natural disasters have increased globally .Reports state that 1.35 million people have lost there lives .Reports states that hydro-meteorological natural disasters have tripled however the factor of geological is still in second place having claimed 32% of the worlds natural disasters.Furthermore there is evidence of natural ocuring in prehistoric times. Its statistics like this that left the world asking the question do humans cause natural disasters

  9. Abubaker

Natural disaster not only this NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)have also released their findings which suggests that natural disaster place unabated planets while the point still develop if that mankind are the sole of natural disaster.

  10. Archi P.

I believe that humans contribute to natural disasters as Cred(Centre of research in Edipidologey) has found that the amount of natural disasters humans can influence has Tripped within 20 years,1994-2013,whilst the ones that humans can not influence has remained nearly the same.

  11. Marwa H.

CRED, ( Centre of Research of Epidemineoloegy) have studied for over 40 years and their latest report indicates that 6,973 natural disasters took place within 19 years and took 1.35 millions innocent lives (on record).
All of these Natural Disasters: Tsunamis, typhoons, floods, and droughts have tripled. Approximately, 100 of these disasters have took place 20 years ago and today, 300 do. Since 525AD natural disasters are occurring till today. On record the third most deadliest earthquake was was measured at 7.9 on the Richtor scale: this took place in Syria (during the Byzantine Empire). At this time humans were unable to contribute to global warming and climate change.

  12. Hamaad D.

In 2010,a 100m deep sinkhole opened up in Guatemala City, and killed more than 170 people. As inspectors investigated the likely cause,in was concluded that Guatemala was built on volcanic soil, which is easily eroded by water. The finger of blame pointed to the government, for poor zoning and planning conditions.

  13. Hamaad D.

The affect of soil erosion can also cause extreme weather. One reason is because eroded river banks and streams get weaker and weaker, and in the end, immense floooding can take place. Erosion can cause large amounts of snow on mountains can roll down, causing great avalanches. The the main point of this is because humans do this process called fracking, which means putting water in the ground, and this causes the oil to come to the top. As well as helping the economy, this can affect the environment, and may cause natural disasters.

  14. Qasim K.

I believe that human are cause natural disaster by ‘ climate change’ and are destroying the ice as most animals have hard time survival their also can be extinct .But humans aren’t the soul cause of some like floods , earthquake, drought (but some times by humans to.) Some are major ‘global warming ‘ and more natural disasters world wide.

  15. Sheima B.

Humans do cause natural disasters as we are the ones releasing bad gases and fuels into the atmosphere

    1. Miss Vega

This doesn’t make sense…? Surely they do contribute to the cause of NAtural Disasters if we are releasing bad gases?

  16. Abubaker

Thought out the 10 years between 1994-2013 CRED research have shown that the increased frequent of natural disaster worldwide reports wŵ

  17. Bijan

It is known as for some humans that natural disasters do not cause by
Humans but in 2015 a huge mudslide accured and killed about 90 people in china due to lackless planning.

  18. Iqra

I think humans do cause natural disasters. In 2010, a 100m sink hole opened in Guatemala City. Guatemala island is made up of volcanic soil, which is easily eroded by water. A tropical storm once came along and caused the sink hole to break open. Unless the government tries to do something about it, there will be more and more of them until the whole island will be swallowed. Also, in Indonesia, there are fires every year, this is caused when people cut and burn down trees for more land. People slash and burn trees to also make paper. When people buy paper, they are contributing to climate change and it causes that company to slash and burn more trees. ‘The controversy comes from how much responsibility we are willing to bear.’
In addition to this, in 1952, London experienced ‘The Killer Fog’, which was one of the most famous natural disasters in the 1900’s. This was caused by a combination of industrial pollution and high-pressure weather conditions. The combination of smoke and fog brought the city to a near standstill and resulted in thousands of deaths. Over 4000 civilians lost their lives. – Alexis & Iqra

  19. Hamaad D.

Also, the rise of air pollution is affecting the weather. The planet is continuing to warm, making the atmosphere and the air we breathe hotter. This is very damaging for our bodies, but some natural disasters love this. Droughts are more likely to occur,as well as forest and bush fires.

  20. Muhammad R.

I think the mane cause of natural disaster is not us humans you probably be thinking how because natural disaster a dated back thousands of years
But I Truely believed that humans are contributeting massively to our climate and global warning these are some of the things us humans do to our climate .THE CHINA MUDslide this happen in chenzen the mudslide happened because the Chinese ctezen had piled there construction waste this had damage the ground the ground also couldn’t hold this waste and just released all its pain and the massive mud slide began

  21. Abdirahman D.

There are many reasons why human are responsible for causing natural disaster like on the other hand in 2015 a massive mudslide occurred in china people were dumping lack of supplies which killed about 90 people which then damaged multiple of buildings they were using poor leadership which don’t contribute to sewer pipes and volcanic soil it caused by not putting place at a safe place which then cause a mudslide if they had checked it whoulden’t happens.

    1. Muhammad R.

      Sick speech

    2. Alina B.

In Indonesia there are forest fires every year as these people have a method that is flash and burn. This is when you cut down trees and leave them there this is due to poor cleaning method. Some areas are made up from pest soil this soil is highly flammable.

    3. Umaiza T.

Actually, there are many reasons why humans DO NOT cause natural disasters as there are many examples as in Syria, there was a Earthquake in 526 AD during the Byzantine Empire. Not only this, but this was before humans had contributed to ‘climate change’ and ‘global warming’. Also, this was 7.9 on the Richter scale, meaning this was the 3rd deadliest Earthquake. The was due to the lack of carbon emissions being produced. Scientists state that seismic activity was more frequent than it is now. Furthermore, this links closely to the Damghan Earthquake in 856 AD which is the 5th deadliest Earthquake. Scientists had found out seismic activity had caused this.

  22. Hamaad D.

In addition, the Shenzhen landslide was a catastrophic event. In 2015,a mudslide occurred due to a man-made mountain of rubbbish and construction waste, which tumbled down the hillside. This caused 73 deaths, and left 4 misssing. Building and public property was destroyed, later found buried in the industrial park.

    1. Zaid M.

However, there have been reports of these natural disasters in prehistoric times, even before humans were born! So how could humans contribute if they weren’t even there?

  23. Absi P.

Humans a do cause natural disasters because it is also believed that sinkholes happen because of humans especially when they are on active volcanic soil wihich can cause to mud slides as well in gutamala there has been lots of sink hole and one was reported that was 100 meters deep because of the president that the city wasn’t looked after really well so I think humans do cause natural disasters.

    1. Absi P.

And in Gutamala city the sink holes are totally dangerous one of the sinkholes have caused approximately 90 deaths and a whole building has been demolished

      1. Absi P.

It is not only in Earth NASA has also discovered in mercury that has had magnetic tornados and also in Neptune there is natural disasters happening so it is not only humans it’s also nature which is making natural disasters

      2. Zaid M.

I do not agree as NASA has reported that there have been storms and disasters on other planets that haven’t even been touched by humans! This further develops the point that humans are merely contributing to the cause of extreme weather.

  24. Rajbir B.

There are many reasons as to why people believe that humans do not cause natural disasters. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) used there telescope to search on other planets,(if natural disasters happen) and they do. There are extreme weathers on other planets and then they cause natural disasters, but no humans live on these planets. This is why people believe we do not cause natural disasters.

  25. Ali K.

On the other hand, china’s mudslides have increased by the population. Some believe it was man-made because of the buildings. It killed over 1100 people and damaged 500 people there were humans say it was man-made it was in China in 2010 due to poor urban planning

  26. Ouzair A.

On the other hand, In 2015 there was massive mudslide in China Shenzhen. Due to people being irresponsible there was poor urban planning and that caused buildings to get demolished.

  27. Armaan M.

I agree with humans causing natural disasters. Even thought the “date back to at least 526AD “ there were still humans leaving a carbon footprint from there and all the way back to the first humans and animals to leave all these ancient NDs. Plus we’re still increasing the chances of NDs by a lot compared to earlier times.

(And btw they date back to at least the Mezoic era with the meteor)

    1. Zaid M.

I do not agree as NASA has reported that there have been storms and disasters on other planets that haven’t even been touched by humans! This further develops the point that humans are merely contributing to the cause of extreme weather. For example, there have been ‘magnetic tornadoes’ on Mercury and obviously that big storm on Jupiter that has been going for hundreds of years.

  28. From Adeena and Alina
Though people believe in different sides of natural disaster, it is evident that the sinkhole in 2010 in Guatemala City was caused by humans. This major event occurred due to the reason of government locating the ground under volcanic soil and under weak construction.

  29. Armaan M.

I agree with humans causing natural disasters. Even thought the “date back to at least 526AD “ there were still humans leaving a carbon footprint from there and all the way back to the first humans and animals to leave all these ancient NDs.

  30. Hamaad D.

Humans also cause great harm to nature and wildlife. Every year in Indonesia, there are great forest fires. It has been discovered that the local people chop down the trees (1.deforestion) and burn them (2.carbon emissions and global warming). This process is completed for space for farmland, palm oil and paper producers/factories. As a result, this could lead to intense wildfires and droughts.
