Reading Comprehension (Fiction): “The Orange Grove”
Story:
In the heart of Andalucía, southern Spain, eleven-year-old Marta walked barefoot through her family’s orange grove. The warm morning sun painted the trees golden, and the air buzzed with bees. Today was special: her grandfather was going to teach her how to harvest the oranges properly – a tradition passed down for generations.
“Marta,” Abuelo called, holding out a small pair of clippers. “The fruit tells you when it’s ready, but you have to listen.”
She smiled, puzzled. “Fruit can talk?”
“Not with words,” he chuckled, placing an orange in her hand. “Feel how heavy it is? Smell how sweet it is near the stem? That means it’s ready.”
Marta followed him, learning to judge by touch, smell, and colour. It wasn’t as easy as it looked. Some oranges were too hard, others too soft, and she had to learn to spot the difference. As they filled the baskets, Abuelo told stories of his childhood, the grove surviving dry seasons, and how their family once sold oranges to the nearby village.
At the end of the day, they sat under an old olive tree, drinking cold lemonade. Marta looked over the grove, her hands sticky with juice and her heart full of pride.
“I think I’m starting to hear them,” she whispered.
Abuelo nodded. “You’re listening now. That’s the first step.”
