Fractions

For our new topic this term in Maths, Year 5 have been learning about fractions. A fraction is an equal amount of something. A fraction shows/tells us how many parts of something we have.

Fractions include a numerator and denominator. The top number of a fraction is known as the numerator. The bottom number of a fraction is known as the denominator. The line between the two numbers, placed below the numerator and above the denominator is known as the vinculum.

Jack had a 12 slice pizza. He ate 3 slices. What is this as a fraction?

Lucy baked a cake for herself and her friends Katie and Emma to share. They cut the cake into 14 equal slices. Lucy had 2 slices, Katie had 3 slices and Emma had just one slice. What fraction of the cake was eaten between the three of them?

Can you find the fraction for these shapes?

Challenge: Can you simplify them?
