4R – Around The World Week

G’day everyone! As you may have guessed through my terrible attempt at using an Australian phrase. This week, 4Red have been learning about Australia and how they celebrate Christmas.

Day 1 – A Very Wombat Christmas

At the start of the week, the children were reading a brand new story called “A Very Wombat Christmas”. The book was about a Wombat that was celebrating Christmas with its fellow Australian animals such as an Emu. The children were asked to sequence the story, which they displayed beautifully through their comic strips. Then they had to act out the story in the form of miming! One child was the narrator and the other was the mime. Watch the video and see how well they did!

Day 2 – Australian Culture

On Tuesday, the children learned about the significance of migration in Australia’s history and how many people were treated inhumanely once they were migrated to Australia. As part of their learning, they were tasked with writing a persuasive letter to Mr Andrews to stop him from sending the Wombat from the story to Australia as a punishment! In the afternoon, the children learned about Poinsettia flowers and their importance in Australian culture, as it is the floral emblem for Brisbane. Have a look at the decorative Poinsettia flowers created by the children, which was added to our class wreath.

Day 3 – Australian History

On Wednesday, the children learned about how Australia was the last of the New World continents to be discovered and how they were inhabited by the Aboriginals for almost 65,000 years! The children had to chronologically order the most important events of Australian history such as the Gold Rush, Eureka Stockade and the colonisation of Australia by the British and Dutch people.

Day 4 – Sleighs!

The children had so much fun creating their very own sleighs for them to deliver their presents. There was a lot of positive collaborative work amongst the class and this resulted in great results, which me and Miss Begum were very proud of!

Day 5 – End of Term

What a half term it has been! It was my very first at Broad Heath and it has been a wonderful experience with 4Red. The children have really adapted well to the new changes with the classroom and have been fantastic. Enjoy your break, be safe and come back reenergised for an exciting new term.

My favourite part of Australian week was making the sleighs because I like creating lots of things in a team and making Poinsettia flowers to make a wreath!!!

I’m very glad to hear that Ranj. That was my favourite part too, even if it was very messy! I hope you are staying safe and enjoying your holidays.
