5Blue’s visit to the Black Country Museum

Today we visited the Black Country Museum!

We experienced what a Victorian Main Street was like. We visited the general store, pawn brokers, a hardware store and a chemist.

What types of things could you buy at a hardware store? Can you explain what the items in these photographs were used for?

In the chemist window, there were two large coloured bottles. What was the purpose of these?

It was important in Victorian time to be fit enough for work. There were no benefits or an National Health Service like we have today. As doctors were expensive, many people chose to visit the chemist as an alternative. What would be a consequence for a family if the parents couldn’t work?

We looked at different types of housing including a rich house, back to back houses and a poor cottage. Describe the layout and the features they included.

Today we live through the pandemic of COVID. What pandemic did the Victorians live through and what caused it?

We attended a mine gas show. We learnt about the different Minerals found in Black Country area. How was limestone used? How was coal used?

How was coal mining dangerous?  Why didn’t they give the children candles? Which animals were used to ensure there was no gas in the mine?

Please watch our video!

In the hardware store you could buy animal traps. The two bottles in the chemist were for people who couldn’t read and by looking at it you could tell it was a chemist. The consequences of people who don’t work and can’t afford medicines might be very ill or they die. Victorian people had oil lamps and fires. The disease in the Victorian times was cho.era and this was to drink water that might kill you. Lime Stone was made to make steel and coal was to make fires. Coal mining was very dangerous. Children weren’t allowed candles because they’d eat it.

In the hardware store you could buy , cockroach traps, mouse traps , butterfly traps and a filter spoon.

In the Chemist shop the 2 bottles purpose way to show this is a chemist shop.

If the family could not work the consequence would be would be that they couldn’t afford to visit doctors , and couldn’t afford to get treated , so they had to rely on the Chemist.

The coal mine was dangerous because it was dark and filled with poisonous gasses and could collapse any time , it was also hard to work in because it was hard to breathe in the mine.

The animals were the first to go into the mine because if they died that would mean there were poisonous gasses contained.

The layout was a single one room . You could only eat , sleep and wash in that room if you were poor.

There was a plague and cholera disease in the Victorian days and it was caused by rats and unclean area.

1 in the hardware store they would buy cockroach traps and these carpet cleaners that look like brushes but made with wood.
2 the purpose of the 2 bottles are because in the Victorian times not many people went to school because it was to expensive so they couldn’t read so they put 2 bottles to show its a chemist shop.
3 Lime stone was used to make iron
4 coal mining was dangerous because people could get lung disease the reason why they didn’t give them candles because they were made of animal fat mostly lamb fat and so the children couldn’t eat them so they poisoned the candles and when the children got the candles they would leave it on the floor so the rats would come and eat it so they die.
Canaries were used so they could see the gas.
A disease happened in 1840 called cholera in Mecca in 1846 which was caused by dirty water so they had to boil the water to make sure it’s clean and not dirty.

In hardware stores you could get traps for mice, rats and crock roaches. You could also get a rug or carpet cleaner to clean your rug/carpet and skates to put on the bottom of your shoes (if you had any) when the rivers would freeze up and get too cold. The Victorians lived through a water pandemic when they would boil their water since they would poo and pee in it and it would get all dirty.Coal mining was dangerous because of all the gases underground like methane. The two large coloured bottles outside the chemist would represent a symbol that this was the chemist. This is because if you were poor you had to do work instead of school so you had no education. You couldn’t read or write so the chemist put the large bottles outside to show that this was the chemist.

At a hardware store there was stuff like fly catchers to kill flies, the old fashioned laundry, a rat trap to trap rats, scorpion traps and a floor cleaner to prevent your carpet getting dusty.
There was two large coloured bottles because this shows that this is a chemist shop.
A consequence for the family and couldn’t work was if they got badly injured while working in a dangerous place such as the mines.
Limestone was used to make steel and coal was used to heat up homes and to ride on a steam engine.
Coal mining was dangerous because rocks could fall on your head and they could be big and badly injure you or maybe they could even kill you.
They did not give children candles because they could be irresponsible and burden themselves and while walking they might drop the candle and it will cause a great disaster.
