Hi Year 4,

This half term in topic we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons. I was wondering if you could complete some Anglo-Saxon based maths problems?

Who came first and how do you know?

Who was last and how do you know?

Silver

    Bronze:
    1. Ethelwulf, Alfred the great, Edward the elder, Edwy, Edward III, Harold II.
    2. Ethelwulf was the first king on the table because it shows on his date that his reign started in 839. That’s the earliest date someone has had on the table.
    3. Harold II was the last king on the table because it shows on his date that his reign had started in 1066. That’s the latest date someone has had on the table.

    Silver:
Edward the elder, Edward III, Alfred the Great, Ethelwulf, Edwy, Harold II

    Gold:
Edward the Elder was Alfred the Great’s son because the same year Alfred died, Edward took over.

    Gold:
I think Alfred the Great’s son is most likely to be Edward the Elder because Alfred the Great’s reign finished when Edward the Elder’s reign started, (as you can see in the table). I also think that King Alfred’s son was Edward the Elder because they had a similar amount of time as king, Alfred the Great has 28 years as king, and Edward the Elder had 25 years as king.

It’s most likely to be Edward the elder because after Alfred’s reign ended
That’s when Edward the elder’s reign started.

I think Ethelwulf came first because the smallest number comes first.
I think Harold came last because the biggest number comes last.

Sorry i meant to answer the questions
It should be Edward the elder because it is next in line and if it is elder that means the son was born first.

I think Edward the Elder is Alfred the great son because Edward the Elder is the next king because the farther king stayed in for 28 years which is the time his son grew up and was old enough to be the king.

A king was usually succeeded by their sons. Using the information from the table who was likely to have been Alfred the Great’s son. How do you know?
Edward the elder was most likely Alfreds son because the time that Alfred’s reign finished on 899(most likely due to death) Edward received the reign on 899. this confirms the idea that Edward is the son of Alfred.
