Year 5 Maths Challenge Spring 2

  • Picture of Mrs Masters Mrs Masters
  • February 14, 2022

Hello Year 5,

This half term’s  Maths Challenge links to our Rivers topic.

Bronze

The River Nile is 4132 miles long – round to the nearest 1000, 100 or 10.

Where are the coldest waters in the world? Find the location of the coldest waters around the world and identify the average temperature. Put the waters in descending order. Remember to label and explain.

Silver

Calculate the temperature of the Pacific Ocean and calculate the temperature differences of this throughout the year e.g. the maximum and minimum temperatures.

Locate the 3 deepest oceans and calculate the combined depth of these in metres and km.

Then order these oceans by the depth and then by temperature too.

Gold

The Atlantic Ocean covers approximately 106,400,000 square kilometres which is 20% of the Earth’s surface. How many square kilometres is the Earth’s surface?

How many square kilometres is the surface of the earth covered by land? What percentage is this?

Can you order the oceans by square kilometres too?

Good luck Year 5 – Complete your work in your homework books and send it to this Sharepoint.

Lawy – This is to help you or anyone else that is stuck.

Bronze for the second part have a look at this website to research about the coldest rivers in the world and then sort in descending order. https://www.worldatlas.com/amp/articles/which-is-the-coldest-river-in-the-world.html

Silver challenge – research the temperature of the Pacific Ocean throughout the year then calculate the differences between some of the months. For e.g Jan – May

Complete this and see how you get on. Please let me know tomorrow if you struggle.
