3 Red were shocked and sad when they heard what had happened to Nasrin Sotoudeh, we believe she is being unfairly treated. She is a brave and resilient women who has stood up for her beliefs. The children strongly believe all women have the right to express themselves and wear what they would like and this should not be considered as a crime.

2 Blue, were not sure who this lady was, so we researched it and found out what happened. We read about her and the children told me that she was a lawyer and she worked in Iran. She helped ladies. Then she got put in prison. The children were upset about what happened and thought it was unfair and horrible. We hope she gets better soon, is free and can go back to her family.

In 4 Blue, we discussed Nasrin’s situation and the things she is campaigning against like capital punishment. We discussed fair punishments for people who have been involved in crime. We talked about prison and we talked about giving people a second chance and not harshly punishing children who have committed crimes. Children need time to think about their choices and to make better choices as adults.
We also talked about the government forcing people to wear the hijab. We talked about what an important choice the hijab is and how it shows respect in Islam and how that choice makes wearing a hijab special. We talked about how unfair it would be if the government forced people to wear something they didn’t like and how we should have the right to choose what we wear.

3 Blue was sadden and were shocked when they heard about Nasrin Sotoudeh. Harrison was devastated because he feels this is an injustice. The whole class believe that Nasrin Sotoudeh was doing an amazing by supporting women’s rights and helping people who were being harshly punished for minor crimes.
3 Blue strongly believe that everyone should be able to wear what they wish and feel comfortable in.
We have also discussed following laws of the country you live in. The children agree that following the law is really important and are formed to keep us safe as a society. However these laws need to be fair and the punishments need to reflect the severity of the crime.

Nasrin Sotoudeh was a brave woman who stood for human rights but was punished to be in prison for 38 years even though according to her husband she had health concerns.

They tried to kill her or put her in prison I think their acts were terrible and if I were her I would do what she done to defend women’s rights.

3 White spoke about how unfair this is. We do not believe anyone has the right to tell another person how to dress. The way people dress shows the world how unique they are and what they are like. It is not fair to take someone’s unique identity away. 38 years in prison for speaking out about women’s rights seems silly to us as people commit worse crimes and her own opinion is a good thing. We should be able to politely challenge rules and things that are unfair. The world needs to accept that all people are different and unique and they express this in many different ways such as how they choose to dress. They need to also show compassion and care for her health as her life matters.
