#UKPW Session 3: Broad Heath Debate

Hold a debate!

In UK Parliament, MPs and members of the House of Lords use debates to discuss topics, hear different points of view and check and challenge the work of the Government.
They also listen to people’s real-life experiences to think about how laws are working and whether they could be improved.

Debate question: Do you think electricity should be limited to increase sustainability?

Breaking down each stage of a debating session:
• Put the children in teams of three
• Seat two teams together, one team debating ‘for’ and the other team debating ‘against’
• Have a timekeeper to make sure everyone has the same amount of time to get their points across
The ‘for’ team goes first. The first speaker from their team must:
• Define or explain any key words
• Introduce the team’s argument in favour of the topic • Begin the debate
The ‘against’ team goes next. The first speaker from their team must:
• Define or explain any key words
• Introduce the team’s argument against the topic being debated
• Rebuttal – they will put forward a set of reasons why the ‘for’ team’s argument is wrong
The second speakers from both teams take their turns next. They will:
• Continue their team’s points for or against and rebut or try to disprove the other team’s argument
The third speakers from each team go last. They will:
• Continue to rebut the opposition’s debate
• Conclude the debate, by summarising points in favour of their team’s argument

Electricity are yousful for traveling with car
    because car are electric.
    It can constribute global warming.
It was built in the 19s.

  3. I think we should use more electric because nowadays it’s more popular and satisfy more than half the population of on the planet . I also think that we should reduce the use of electricity so we can explore Mother Nature whilst it was made for a extremely important reason . Even though basically majority of the modern inventions have a use of electricity we still need to use what we were born on and we will never leave it.

    For
I think electricity should be limited to increase sustainability because
electric emits heat and can cause fires. Additionally, using to much
electric can increase greenhouse gasses. It is important to the Paris Climate Agreement ( PCA ) have NDC goals.

    Against
I think that we shouldn’t have a limit in electricity because the children that study at school would need devices. For example, they would use IPads, lights and interactive whiteboards.

  5. Timothy C.

Do you think electricity should be limited to increase sustainability?
I think electricity should not be reduced i think it should be the way it originally is.
It is good because people need electricity in their every day lives because refrigerators need electricity and lots of stuff in our lives need electricity.

    For:
We need to use heaters, oven, microwave, tv, phones lot more less we need to save technology. Roma Alisha

I don’t think that we should limit electricity because some people may not have enough electricity and if you limit it there electricity they won’t be able to have any.And if we go back into lockdown then kids will need the internet to do home learning. And we won’t be able to use our everyday things like heaters, kettles and other stuff.

  8. James H.

I think electricity should stay the same because if we go back into lockdown the children have to do online work and you will have to sit in the cold

    For:
Reducing energy (electricity) use in your home saves money, also it reduces pollution, which saves the environment. If we create more solar power objects it means less electricity is being used. Did you know? More electricity being used means that more Carbon Dioxide is being released.

    For-
Reducing energy use in your home saves you money, increases our energy security and reduces the pollution that is emitted from non- renewable sources of energy.if you are planning to install a small renewable energy system to make your own electricity , such as a solar electric system or small wind turbine , reducing your electricity loads is the first step because it allows you to purchase a smaller and less expensive system.

  12. Eesa F.

    Against:
If people don’t have a lot of Electricity and they have kids and we give more Electricity then they can have more power.
We need to give a lot of Electricity so peoples that have less Electricity have lot of Electricity.
And if we have more Electricity that people that have less power have more power.

  13. Reece T.

We strongly agree electricity should be limited because energy appliance also it helps you save save money by reducing your energy bills at home.we should do it because we can get more exercise not just sitting back watching t.v or playing games. It can use for home learning if we go to lockdown. You can always use stuff with batteries.

  14. Ellie T.

Today we did a debate in class and it was fair we had a equal amount of time for each person . The debate was about electricity and have it should be stoped for sustainability.
    Against:
It’s fine the way it is
The lower the limit the more expensive things would be
People are making electric cars to stop the cause of pollution
    Homeless shelters need electricity.

If we use too much electricity, it will contribute to global warming.
Too much electricity can impact animals environments, ecosystems and climate change.
Electricity can also create greenhouse gases and other air pollution.
25% of the 2019 greenhouse gases were from electricity, this is bad for the planet.
Electricity also has high costs which makes people loose money.
Electricity also uses fuels rods which are very hot and highly radioactive.
There are risks of accidents which may lead to large amounts radioactive substances leaking into to the environment.
Power Plants emit MUCH more pollution than cars. These can pollute 3x as more of cars in 2007.
U.S power plants can release 2.56 Billion tons of Co2 that’s the same as 449 million cars of today’s cars.
The U.S creates over 2 Billion Co2 every year.

We have to reduce electricity because we can become more eco friendly by using less electricity like a printer . Trees get cut down to make paper and gets printed(deforestation). For a replacement, we can use solar power and or use life hacks and replace ice for fridges and fire for cookers.

  17. It’s fine the way it is
The lower the limit the more expensive
    People are making electrics cars
    Electric makes less pollution
    Effects Holmes shelter

    1. We should limit electricity because if you live in a big household you will have to keep on spending the limit on electricity and if the limit is £20 or so you will have to keep on paying £20 and soon it will waste your money. If there is no limit you can just spend £60 on electric and you will not have to pay £20 pound every day

  18. Muhammed A.

Electricity should not be limited because:
People use electric car and if your out of electricity you cannot use the car.
If someone is in danger and they have no more electric they will not be able to phone any emergency services.
Electricity should not be limited as electric is made by coal.

  19. Aayan S.

    Aayan’s S statement
I think we should use a bit more of electricity, for example ( some electric cars that don’t use diesel or fuel and electric only goes 30 kwh (per hour) it is not using an average amount but if every person tries it would lower sustainability by just a bit. It would not damage the Ozone if half or more people in the Earth were using electric bikes, electric cars, electric scooters or even walking. SAVE OUR WONDERFUL EARTH FROM DYING!

    Umar’s statement
I DO NOT AGREE, THIS IS MY STATEMENT. Reducing your energy, reduces the need for fuel and diesel, the more diesel and fuel is breaking the Ozone layer so by reducing this no money is spent and every one can do this because some electric cars are more expensive than normal cars but if you ride a scooter(not an electric scooter )or a bike.It is saving money and keeps you healthy.USE LESS ELECTRICITY,MORE SUSTAINABILITY!!!!

  20. Steven N.

It should not be limited because what if someone’s in danger and they can’t phone the police because they need to charge their phone and even when your working night shifts you need light even if it’s very late at night

  21. Bijan

I believe electricity shouldn’t be limited because if there is limited, you can’t control your fridge 2 if you have limited there will be more pollution and more sun light in our atmosphere

  22. Yahya K.

We think you should stop using electricity because is unsitanable b.
We feel you should install solar panels to give electricity . We found another way to power your appliances you should use olden way to run your home instead of a radiator you can use fire so this is not thickening the ozone layer .however you can do this and afford better quality clothes which is giving back to the economy

  23. Aamina B.

    For:
According to research,in 2020 the amount of electricity that was used was 287.58 in terrawatt hours. This is because in 2004 global warming wasn’t a major impact however in 2020 the amount of electricity was reduced because of the crude oil which has been used to create electricity is decreasing.Crude oil continues to hold the largest share of the energy mix.(31.210).The oil is burned to heat water and produces steam. This steam propels the blades as a turbine. This is attached to a generator which produces electricity.

  24. Archi P.

I believe that by not limiting electricity we are helping the Environment as a study was taken of electronic cars and combustion cars found that electric cars would benefit the ozone layer more during summer mouths and reduce more air pollution.

  25. Armaan M.

I don’t beleive electricity should not be limited as 1) It takes about £60 to fill up (completely) a petrol tank, while electricity can cost as little as 96p so it’s cheap cheap, and 2) Using dinosaurs fossils can cause lots of global warming (compared to electricity), which obviously isn’t good for the environment.

  26. Mohammad A.

Electricity in the UK should be limited for quite a little bit of time as the Uk uses more gas and petrol than electricity itself.on gas/petrol they use 33-38kWH(kilowatts) 8.5-10kWH. Kilowatts mean unit of energy. By using fire and friction we can reduce the amount of electricity running through the house. Fresher food and growing foods in your garden is using less amount of gasses.
By Aayan M ,Marwa and Ibrahim

  27. Adeena and Safya

We think that we should reduce electricity because the world’s largest electricity contributor (China) produces 27.32% of electricity each year. So we suggest in dry seasons you wear less layers and good quality clothes so the community can earn money and in the cold and wet season you wear more layers but better material so you don’t have to use too much heaters and decrease the amount you use in a year.
Everyone will use electric cars in 2025 which will decrease the amount of petrol and it is bad for our environment because when you use to much petrol the crude oil which comes from the deep underground will eventually run out because it is predicted that if you use too much the crude oil our oil supply will decrease till there is no more and the same will happen to petrol so this is why we should limit how much electricity we should use.

    1. Miss Vega

Great response – please remember to use full sentences and punctuate properly!

  28. Umaiza T.

I think electricity shouldn’t be limited because people create electricity by burning coal, in this case, it pollutes the air and causes the ozone layer to thin, therefore, the sun easily goes through the ozone layer and into the atmosphere. To stop this, electricity can be made by NOT burning coal. Coal is the dirtiest of fossils fuels, and creating electricity does not involve burning it.

    1. Miss Vega

What is the most economically viable way of generating electricity?

      1. Umaiza T.

Instead of burning coal, generating electricity can be more easier by a power plant.

  29. Absi P.

creating electricity doesn’t need burning or need to make petrol out of coal. And if you use petrol cars it will release the smoke into the athmosphere and the earth zone layer is getting lose

    1. Miss Vega

Did you mean the O zone layer?

      1. Absi P.

Yes I just got confused with the suns thick layer breaking thorough the earth layer

  30. Hajrah S.

Electric cars are better for the environment. They emit fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than petrol or diesel cars. Benefits of electric cars is the contribution that they can make towards improving air quality in towns and cities. With no tailpipe, pure electric cars produce no carbon dioxide emissions when driving. This reduces air pollution considerably.electric cars give us cleaner streets making our towns and cities a better place to be for pedestrians and cyclists.

    1. Miss Vega

But where do we get this electricity from?
