Year 5 Reading Challenge

Read this paragraph aloud to yourself (You may need to look up words you do not know the meaning of)

The text contains a description about a famous piece of artwork!

Look out for the writer’s use of similes that make the description come alive!

The factory chimneys smoked like fat cigars. Around them lay rows of terraced houses like lines of dominoes. In the morning the workers were drawn from these houses to the factory, like iron filings dragged towards a magnet. In the evening they returned, young men puffed up like full-blown sails, old men bent like thorn trees on a windy hillside, girls gossiping like flights of starlings.

Your task is to create a piece of artwork that matches the description of the text.

Then write a paragraph to assist your picture, this must explain what you can see in the picture. Remember to comment on the writer’s use of similes!

My example: To the left I have drawn terraced houses that look like dominoes. Just like a domino, they are in rows, rectangle, squashed together and look the same.

I can’t wait to reveal the original painting! Good luck year 5!
