Reading Challenge – To use inference skills to write a recount on the Moon Landing

During Autumn 1, we have been learning about recounts and making them as effective as we can. You will need to carry out some research into the moon landing and then write a recount, choosing a challenge from the list below.

“That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Neil Armstrong (first man on the moon)

Use the picture and quote to inform your own recount writing:

Bronze

 Write a catchy headline and an introductory paragraph (using the five W’s)

Silver

Headline, introductory paragraph using journalistic language and complex sentences.

Gold

Write a newspaper report using journalistic language and include at least one quote from the time. (You will need to do some research).

    The first man is space was neil armstrong and buzz aldrin the they set off 16 july 1969 they landed on the moon 24th of july 1969 they spent 21 hours on the moon inclunding a 7 hour sleep with the famouse words of neil armstrong where “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”

    THE MAN ON THE MOON!
    The first man to step on the moon was Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 launch. He stepped on the moon on the day that we will never forget July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Standing more than 100 metres tall, the Saturn V rocket blasted the 3 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Micheal Collins into space. Apollo 11 travelled around 240,000 miles in 76 hours before it finally entered a lunar orbit on 19th July. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin prepared to travel to the surface of the Moon in the lunar module, Eagle, whilst Michael Collins remained behind in the command module, circling the Moon. Over 53 million households tuned in to watch this mission on TV, and an estimated 650 million viewers worldwide watched the Moon landing. Neil Armstrong has said a famous quote on the moon “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.
    The objective for the Apollo 11 was to land on the moon and go back home safely. This was a goal set by President John F. Kennedy because he heard that Russia (USSR) will be the first to go to the moon but, the President wants to prove them wrong.
    When their job was done the astronauts climbed back into the rocket and headed back to earth. After two and a half days travelling, the crew splashed into the Pacific Ocean and the mission was safely completed! When asked about the mission Neil Armstrong said “It was amazing, I am very lucky to have experienced such a fantastic and historical event.” All three astronauts are now back with their families celebrating their achievement. This is a very exciting time in the world of space exploration and many people will never forget the day mankind stepped on the moon.

    Space Race Over?

    Ever since 1955, the US and the USSR were competing against each other to see who would reach the moon and outer space first. Mind you, the Soviets sent Yuri Gagarin into space first with his capsule, Vostok 1, but, the US sent Neil Alden Armstrong, Edwin Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. and Michael Collins onto the moon with Apollo 11 and they landed just yesterday after 14 years of attempts. Neil Armstrong was the first of the group to walk on the moon’s surface. He described it as “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” as he set foot on the moon. Buzz Aldrin also quoted, “Your mind is like a parachute: if it isn’t open, it doesn’t work.” The idea that a person would walk on the moon’s surface was so astonishing that over 53 million households around the world tuned in to view it and over 650 million people watched it.
