  • Picture of Mrs Latham Mrs Latham
  • February 24, 2025

Hi Year 5,

This half term we are learning about the Victorians. Can you complete a Victorian money challenge using the information you have been given?

Bronze: The chimney sweep has earned 4 Silver Sixpence for his day’s work. How much has he earned in total? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Silver: In my purse, I have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins. How much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.

Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.

    Bronze:
The chimney sweep earned 24 pence in total.Because 1 sliver sixpence is equal to 6 pence. So half of 4 is 2 and I add 6+6=12 but I double one more time and 12+12=24.
    —————————————————————
    Silver :
In the purse there are £3.24. Because 1 sovereign is £1, 3 of them is £3 and 1 florins is worth 2 shillings ( 12 pence)
, so I did 12+12=24 and I double one more time because there are 2 florins . In total it £3.24.
    —————————————————————
    Gold:
The highest amount is 120 shillings
(120 pence) and the lowest is 63 shillings ( 63 pence).
    —————————————————————
    Platinum
During the Victorian era, a loaf of bread cost £0.40 below £1.00 but now a loaf of bread cost £4.00 , now is 2 time higher than a loaf of bread in the Victorian era.Other thing you can buy is dozens of eggs and a new pairs of shoes.

    One pound = 20 shillings

one Pound would buy 80-100 loaves of bread in Victorian times compared to only 1 loaf today.

A Pound is not worth the same now as it was then. You got a lot more then.

The chimney sweep earned 24 pence in total.
I worked it out by using the table
    a silver sixpence = 6 pence, so 6×4=24

    Silver
    A sovereign = one pound 3×1 = 3 pound, a florin = 2 shillings 2×2= 4 shillings . I have 3 pounds and 4 shillings in my purse.

    Gold
    10 shillings or 63 shillings.
    1 Guinea = 21 shillings. 3×21= 63 shillings . The answer is 3 guineas is more than 10 shillings.

    Platinum to do

    3£ and 4 shillings.
I know this because three sovereign = 3£ and tow florin = 4 shillings.
    #Gold:
    The 3 guinea is higher than ten shillings because 1 guinea = 21 shillings 21 x 3 = 63 shillings.
    one shilling = 12 pence 12 x 10 = 120 pence but 63 shillings x 12 = 756 pence.

Victorian Times: £1 could buy 120–240 loaves of bread (since a loaf cost 1–2 pence).

Today: £1 can buy 0.5–1 loaf of bread (since a loaf costs £1–£2).

BRONZE : The chimney sweep has earned a total of 24 pence (or 2 shillings) for his day’s work.

    Here’s how i did it!

    1 Silver Sixpence = 6 pence.

    4 Silver Sixpence = 4 × 6 pence = 24 pence.

    24 pence = 2 shillings (since 12 pence = 1 shilling).

So, the total earnings are 24 pence (or 2 shillings).

SILVER : You have a total of 64 shillings (or 3 pounds and 4 shillings) in your purse.

    Here’s how i did it!

    3 sovereigns = 60 shillings.

    2 florins = 4 shillings.

Total = 64 shillings (or 3 pounds and 4 shillings).

    GOLD : Understanding the Guinea:

    1 Guinea = 21 shillings.

Calculating the Value of 3 Guinea:

    3
    Guinea
    =
    3
    ×
    21
    shillings
    =
    63
    shillings
    3 Guinea=3×21 shillings=63 shillings.

    Comparing the Amounts:

    10 shillings vs. 63 shillings.

Clearly, 63 shillings (3 Guinea) is significantly higher than 10 shillings.

    Final Answer:
3 Guinea (63 shillings) is higher than 10 shillings.

PLATINUM : £1 could buy 120–240 loaves of bread (since a loaf cost 1–2 pence).

    Bronze:
    1) I know that the chimney sweep earns 24 silver sixpence a day I know this because one silver sixpence is equal to 6 and he earns 4 a day so we would need to do 4×6 which I know equals to 24.

    Silver:
    1) You have £3.24 in your purse I know this because one sovereign is equal to a pound so 3 of them would be 3 pounds because 1×3=3 so that’s £3 and one florin is equal to 2 shillings and two shilling are equal to 12 pence so I know 2 florins would be equal to 24 pence because 12×2=24 so altogether you would have £3.24 in your purse.

    Gold:
    1) 3 guinea is greater then 10 shillings I know this because 1 guinea is equal to 21 shillings which is already greater then 10 shillings and 3 guineas would be 63 shillings so I know from this information 3 guineas is greater then 10 shillings.💸

    Platinum:
    1) In Victorian money You would be able to buy one loaf of bread, 12 eggs, and one pair of shoes because one pound today was worth about £2.50 then and a huge difference is that now You can only buy a pack of him with £1.😮😮😮

You were able to purchase a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs or a nice pair of shoes, however a pound today can only buy you one packet of sweets. £1 was equal to 240 pence in Victorian times which is equal to £2.40, so it is almost A £2 DIFFERENCE!

    It is 24.
I know this because , you gave us a key and I saw that six silverpenec is equals to 6 .
So what I did was 6✖️4 is 24 so that is how I got they answer of 24.
    Silver
    In your purse is £1.12p
I know this because on the key solvereing is equals to £1.00 and a Florian equals to a shilling and a shilling is equal to 12p.
    Gold
10 shillings are greater than 3 Guinea
I know this because 3 Guinea is 63 (I did formal written method) and 10 shillings is equal to £1.20p(I did formal written method) so I know that 10 Shillings > 3 Guinea .
