5Blue- Design and Technology week

This week, the children were given the following design brief.

The children investigated cam mechanisms and identified the different components. They looked at different shaped cams and discussed how they moved differently.

What is a cam? What is a follower?
What different types of cams have you learnt about and how do they work?

They created a design for one of the children and planned out how they would go about making the moving toy. They worked in pairs to do this.

What was your design idea?

In pairs, children built a frame, made a cam mechanism and then thought about aesthetics.

Building the frame and a working cams mechanism:

Working on the aesthetics:

What challenges did you face?

Did you have to adapt your plan? How?

Our final products….

The toys were a huge success and both Sadie and Arthur loved them! we done to the winning designs!

A cam is a rotating disk shaped to convert rotary into linear motion.
A follower is a component which follows the movement of the cam.
The different types of cams that I have learnt were snail shaped, egg shape, round shape, hexagon shape, eccentric shape and ellipse shape cams. My target audience was Arthur
The challenge was that we had to make sure our cam was the right shape so it could work and the follower was in the right place also we had to make our topper a bit bigger. We had to adapt our plan by changing our plan and improving it.

A cam is a small shaped disc that either goes linear or rotary mode. E.g snail shape cam.
A follower is the component which rotates around the cam.
I have learnt about egg shape snail shape eclipse shape eccentric shape ellipsis shape round shape hexagon shape.
My design was a dragon inside a jack in a box and when u spin the cam it is suppose to pop out of the jack in a box so it’s a dragon in a box.
The challenge was when we spun the cam it sometimes got stuck because of the glue so we sand papered the bottom of the follower.
The thing I adapted was the embellishments and the unicorn tape and rainbow tape for the bottom of it.

1.A cam is a small shape with a hole that moves the picture being chosen
2.A follower is a a round piece of material that moves when the cam moves
    3. The different types of cams we learnt includes snail, egg, hexagon, round and eclipses shaped cam
    4. Our design was a big sheep which had golden ears, hooves and tail
    5. The challenges we faced was making the system that included the cam.
    6. We adapted our plan by making the topper bigger so it fitted on the skewer we used

    What is a cam?
A cam is a shape mounted on a shaft that causes a lever or follower to move. As the cam rotates, the follower rises and falls in a process.
    What is a follower?
A follower is a component and the cam rotates in a circular motion.
The different cams I have learnt are…
Snail cams, they work by rotating in one direction
    Egg shape
    Hexagon shape
    Round shape
    Ellipse shape
Me and my partner designed a cat corn for Sadie, we used…
    Rainbow tape
    Unicorn tape
    Gems and sequins
    Glitter tape
    What challenges did you face?
    The challenges we faced were…
Measuring how small or big the frame has to be
    The weight of the frame
    Drawing the topper
Did you have to adapt your plan and how?
We adapted our plan by adding some embellishments, adding a topper and adding some colourful tape.

A cam is disk that supports the cam mechanism.
A follower is a component to the cam.
Some cams are egg, snail, hexagon, ellipse and circular.
Our design idea was to do a sheep.
We made the cam but it didn’t work properly so we made a new cam.

  6. Zahra A.

A cam is where the follower is on top an rotates.
The challenges I faced different designs and securing it more.
The things a adopt was rainbow duck tape Jems.

A cam is a rotating disk.
A follower is something that follows the cam,
I made a sheep for Arthur.
The challenge was to make sure that the cam was under the follower and the follower followed the cam. We had to adapt our plan because at first our toys weren’t perfect so we had to improve it.

    What is a cam?
A cam is a rotating disc with different shapes. e.g snail shape.
    What is a follower?
A follower is a mechanical component which rotates around the cam in a motion way.
What different types of cams have you learnt about and how do they work?
I have learnt about egg shape, snail shape, eccentric shape, hexagon shape, round shape and ellipse shape.
The snail shape cam only rotates in one way if you want it to work.
The egg shape, eccentric shape, hexagon shape, round shape and ellipse shape can rotate anyway around to work.
    What was your design idea?
Me and my partners design was a mythical and mystic dragon with a snail shaped cam and it rotated in a rotary and linear motion.
    What challenges did you face?
The challenges we faced were the size of the frame, the weight of the frame and making the topper.
Did you have to adapt your plan? How?
We adapted the plan because we had to much tape so we added some colourful tape, we adapted the topper because it was falling off and it was not cut out properly and we didn’t have any colourful embellishments but then we decided to add some embellishments because it wasn’t colourful.

A cam is a rotating disc. A follower follows the movement of a cam. The cam names I have learnt are: egg shaped, snail, ellipse, hexagonal, eccentric and circular. Our design idea was a sheep. The challenges I faced were the cam and the topper. We did have to adapt our plan. We did this by changing the topper to make it look better and we changed the cam to make it work better

    Well done everybody

  11. Luxor A.

    1. A cam is a rotating disk that can go up or down.
    2. A follow is a component to the cam .
    3. The different type of cams we have looked are snail shape, egg shape, circle shape and hexagon shape cam.
    4. Me and my partners design was to make dragon topper,a snail shape cam, stick for a follower and a cardboard box for a frame and then designed it with colourful duck tape, purple tissue and pop poms.

  12. Lawy A.

    1. A cam is a shape that moves the cam mechanism.
The follower is the circle on top of the cam.
    2. The cams I learnt was the egg shape snail shape hexagon shape ellipse
    circle shape and eccentric shape.
    3. We faced when are cam got stuck so we changed it.
    4. Yes we had fix the cam and topper and we done them both with some help with Mrs Khan for our topper and help from Mrs Street with the cam.

  13. Sumayyah A.

    1. The challenges i faced was making the topper big and appealing making it work not making the stick fall and much more because i needed help a lot so it was hard.
    2. The things i adapted was the rainbow duck tape and some some embellishments because i wanted it to be appealing.
