Autumn 2 Reading Challenge Year 2

Metals

Metals come from rocks called ores.

They are stronghard and shiny materials that can be hammered into different shapes without breaking.

Their properties make them useful for objects such as cutlery, saucepans, cars and coins.

Plastics

Plastics are materials made from chemicals and are not found in nature. They are strong and waterproof, and can be made into any shape by applying heat. Plastics can also be dyed different colours or made to be transparent.

Plastics are used to make all sorts of things, such as bags, bottles and toys.

Glass

Glass is made by melting sand and other minerals together at very high temperatures.

Glass is normally transparent and can be made into many different shapes. Thick glass can be strong, but thin glass will break very easily.

Glass is used for objects that need to be transparent such as windows and spectacles.

Wood

Wood comes from trees.

It is strong and long lasting.

Wood is used to make things such as furniture that need to be strong and last a long time.

Fabrics

Fabrics are made from thin fibres woven together.

Some fabrics, such as wool, cotton and silk, are natural (the fibres come from living things).

Some fabrics, such as polyester and nylons are made from synthetic fibres, which are made in factories, from chemicals.

Different fabrics have different properties. Fabrics can be stretchy (a pair of tights), insulating (keep you warm, like a woollen coat) or absorbent (a towel).

Fabrics are used to make clothes as they are flexible and comfortable, can be warm and do not wear out easily.

BRONZE

Write one fact about each material.

SILVER

Would metal be a good material for a coat? Why?

Would wood be a suitable material for a window? Why?

Would fabric be a good material for a table? Why?

GOLD

Use a dictionary to find the meaning of: transparent, waterproof, absorbent & flexible.

PLATINUM

Think of some different objects of your own. What are they made of? Why is this a suitable material? Use evidence from the text.

A material is a substance that is made up of matter, it can be in a solid, liquid or gas form. We use a range of different materials in everyday life for example, plastic, glass, metal and wood, cotton, paper, mud and soil are examples of these materials. Grouping is the process of separating objects based on the materials they are made of materials. May be natural or artificial.
Knife is a tool or weapon with a cutting edge or blade, usually attached to a handle or hilit, one of the earliest tools used by humanity knives appeared
Pots and pan can be made of all types of types of materials from stainless steel and aluminium to nonstick, ceramic nonstick, cast-iron, enameled cast iron carbon steel
Glass is made from natural and abundant raw materials sand, soda ash and limestone that are melted at high temperature to form a new material glass manufacturing has an age old tradition which daters to around 3500.

The chair is made out of wood and this is a good material because it is strong so you can sit on it and it won’t break. But if the chair was made out of glass it will break easily because it is very delicate.

My jumper is made out of wool so that means it is a fabric. This is good because it keeps me warm and is comfortable to wear but if my jumper was made out of plastic it would be uncomfortable to wear, itchy and hard to move in.

The windows in my house are made out of glass. This is good because it is transparent so you can see through it and look outside. It is also good because glass lets light in to your house so it won’t be dark inside.
