Maths Week in 2Red

It’s the last week of Half Term which mean….Project Week!!!
This Project week is all about Shape. The children will draw upon their Year 1 learning and develop it this week by exploring 2D and 3D shapes. They will be learning about their properties and using the correct Mathematical Vocabulary.

Today, the children worked in groups and explored 2D shapes. They went on a shape hunt around our indoor and outdoor learning environment. 2 Red learnt the properties of these shapes and played familiar games that had been adapted by shape. They created some fantastic shape models by using playdough and art straws, sticks and also drew some wonderful pictures by drawing around 2D shapes! Have you ever created a house using Geo-boards? They did that too!!

What shapes did you find in our school environment?

Which shape is the most popular?

How many sides does a Hexagon have?
How many sides does an Octagon have?

Today, the Learning Objective was to identify lines of symmetry. The children used their new Mathematical Knowledge and applied it to their work. They have drawn shapes and identified their lines of symmetry, completing a symmetrical picture by using a mirror and ended the day with some fantastic shape paintings inspired by Kandinsky…

Do all shapes have a line symmetry?

How many lines of symmetry can you find on a square?

What 2D shapes did Kandinsky like to use in his paintings?

Today, the children explored the properties of 3D shapes. They learnt about faces and that the faces of 3D shapes are made from 2D shapes. They gained new shape vocabulary and learnt about edges (sides) and vertices (corners) and were able to identify and create a 3D shape from its net.

Today, Year 2 explored 3D shapes further. They inspected shapes and determined which 2D shapes were the faces of 3D shapes. The children learnt about the edges of a shape and then using all of this new shape knowledge to create 3D shapes using 4 different materials…
