Today we focused on the Islamic festival Eid al Fitr. We learnt how Muslims celebrate Eid and what cultural traditions may be carried out in Muslim homes.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar calendar. It is a special time for Muslim people.

Eid al-Fitr is a special celebration at the end of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr means ‘The Festival of Breaking of the Fast’.

Fasting during Ramadan means that Muslim people do not eat between sunrise and sunset.

Eid al-Fitr starts when a new moon is seen in the sky.

A new moon is the first phase of the moon, when it looks like a very thin crescent shape.

Have a look at our videos. Children spoke about what takes place at Eid.

What did you learn? How do you celebrate Eid?

I love eid because we decorate our house with lights and balloons. We get lots of presents and we give presents out. We get to see all of our family and go out together and sometimes when it’s a nice day we have a bouncy castle and a party in the garden.
