What is Reading Gladiators?…

If you’ve been given the opportunity to join the ‘Reading Gladiators,’ then you’re one lucky Broad Heather…You are now a part of ‘The Ultimate Book Club.’
This club is designed to give you the opportunity to read a variety of books, from a wider range of genres, broadening your reading skills and helping you develop your understanding of different texts. During group we will be discussing the texts,YOU will be given the opportunity to have your say and share your opinion.
Over the next 5 weeks, we will also be taking part in Mini Challenges, Role Play, some creative activities and ultimately Reading for Pleasure!

Based on the front cover…who would you predict Kevin was?

As a group we familiarised ourselves with the main characters. The children were intrigued and eager to get stuck in and read about the adventures the characters had.

After reading the first character, the Gladiators used their retrieval skills to answer questions about the text.

This week in Reading Gladiators, I introduced Year 3 to our first book.
‘The Legends of Kevin.’
We started our session with a Cover Reveal. Have you heard of the phrase, Don’t judge a book by its cover? Well, that’s exactly what we did. This encouraged the children to notice small details and use these to make Appropriate Predictive Inferences. By doing this they were creating a deeper understanding of the cover and the possible content of the story.

HOME TASKS


– Finish reading Chapter 1 (page 17-19).
Answer the Reading Questions for Chapter 1.


-Before next Wednesday, Read Chapter 2.

Reading Questions for Chapter1

1. After today’s session, we know the names of the author and illustrator but who is who? (You may need to research this…)

2. What species of tree does Kevin live in?

3. What is the name of the town where Max lives?

4. What floor does Max and his family live on?

5. At the end of the chapter the author writes, ‘there came a loud DOOF and a quiet “Bother!” ‘

    3.The town where max lives in called bumbleford.
    4.max and his family lived on the top floor of the tall building.
