Year 6 Parents – we need you!!!

Next week is Arts Around the World Week and Year 6 have an exciting project!

We are looking at Nigerian fashion and are challenging the children to design and sew their own kimonos, inspired by the wonderful Grey Project – a sustainable nigerian fashion house.

If you have a sewing maching or are particularly skilled with a needle and thread and would like to come in to support this project on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th, please speak to your child’s teacher before Friday.

We’d love to have as many parents in to support the project as possible.

My parents are from Nigeria and my mom said kimono is not part of Nigerian fashion. Except what you mean is using African fabric to make a kimono.

Hey Joni! You’re right, traditionally the Kimono is Japanese. We will be studying a sustainable fashion brand (founded by the lovely Rukky Ladoja in Lagos) who create all types of different pieces of clothing, using batik an traditional dying method that we will get to try! If you look on their website: https://dyelab.ng/ you can see that they have a piece described as having ‘kimono sleeves’. We felt this was a great opportunity to link to one of our later geography units, Japan!

I hope this makes things a bit clearer for you :)

        Thank you.
