Steam Week in 2 Red 💧

This Project Week is STEAM Week (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths).
Our big question is….
What is water?
Today the children gained new knowledge about the Earth’s water…They learn about the percentage of Earth’s water, Salt water & Fresh Water…
The children identified the layers of the ocean and even explored the different creatures that live in each. They carried out a fascinating experiment where they created the layers of the ocean, watch this short video to see how they got on….

How Many Layers does the Ocean have?…
What are they?

What Percentage of the Earth is Water?

What Percentage of the Earth’s water is Fresh?

What an eventful day we’ve had!
The children learnt about rock-pools and worked together using materials from our outdoor learning environment to create their very own rock-pool…
They were ROCK-tastic!
They took part in an experiment using their senses to find similarities and differences between Fresh and Sea Water.
To finish their second day of STEAM week, they created the 5 layers of the ocean using tones and shade and these paintings turned out beautifully!
Stake a look for yourself and see just how creative your children are!

What bodies of water are fresh water?

Why is water in the ocean different to the water found in lakes, rivers or streams?

Today, we enjoyed reading a beautiful book called,
Dear, Greenpeace.
The children then researched and learnt more about the organisation and how they Save sea animals, whales in particular. They even had a little role play where a few children acted like a member of Greenpeace and were put in a ‘hot seat’ and asked questions.
The Children then worked together in groups to design a variety of Posters.

What do Greenpeace do?

Why are oceans important to humans?

What are the 3 biggest threats in the ocean?

Today’s learning had a boat theme…
Have you ever wondered why the water rises when you get in the bath or how a huge cargo ship floats in water ?
Today in 2 Red, we learnt about Buoyancy. We tested our new found knowledge with uni-fix cubes and a range of other objects/materials to see if they would float or sink.
We then followed a step by step instruction video to make an origami boat, designed a logo for Greenpeace and finally designed and created a floating boat for them too.

What is Bouyancy?

What is the force that pushes something down?

What material did you notice that floated the most?

Bouyancy is the force to an object because of that object float up the water without sinking example boat, ship.
Gravity is the force that pushes something down.
The material that floats the most is
empty plastic bottle, empty yogurt pot, plastic ball, sticks, leaves.

    Global warming
    Overfishing
Drilling oil from water – oil spills.

          Brilliant answers, Adam.
You have shown a great understanding of this weeks learning- Super Star!⭐️

            2. The force that pushes something down is the gravity.
            3. The material floated the most was broken sticks and the ball was floating.
My favourite day was when we made our own ships and i shared my plastic straws with my friends on my table.
