Supporting the local community in 6 White

On Tuesday, the children walked from school to Foleshill Community Centre. The purpose of the visit was to link the idea of fundraising to our English unit, which is persuasive writing. The children have been tasked with writing a persuasive letter to the local councillor with regards to raising funds to enable the sports centre to redevelop and modernise their facilities. Many of our children and families past and present use the centre, and we are hopeful that we can make a difference!

Whilst at the centre, we were lucky enough to be able to meet with the manager, Helen Needham, who gave us a guided tour of the centre. We started in the community gardens, which are currently providing the kitchen facility with fruit and vegetables. We were also able to see the kitchen in action! We explored the sports hall, identifying problems such as broken windows, a lack of access (stairs) and tired decor. We there also able to visit the community shop, a spin on traditional food banks were customers can โ€˜shopโ€™ in a pleasant and welcoming environment.

We are now looking forward to researching the centre further, and beginning to learn all of the skills ready to write our persuasive letter! Watch this space!
