The difference is that reported speech doesn’t have inverted commas as it is reported and not said exactly at the same time it was said but direct does have inverted commas and is direct

in direct speech they have inverted commas punctuation and
It tells you what they are saying and who said it. With reported speech has one person saying what the other said and they don’t have inverted commas.

Explain what is the difference between reported and direct speech?
The difference between direct speech and reported speech is that for direct speech you use inverted commas but for reported speech you don’t use inverted commas.
Direct speech is when you write something that someone says using the exact words. You have to use inverted commas. An example is :
“Can we go to the park?” asked John.
Reported speech is when you write something but you do not use the exact words that they say but you do not use inverted commas. An example is :
‘The teacher told John to do his homework.’
